CLOSE CONTESTS ATTRENTHAM

Opening Day of Wellington Autumn Meeting

LADY PAM WINS THE ST. LEGER

Great Thompson Tussle; Silvermine & Laughing Prince

KARAPOTI LIVES UP TO BRILLIANT RECORD

(By “The Watcher.”)

Excellent racing with some extremely close finishes featured the opening of the Wellington Racing Club’s autumn meeting on Saturday. Conditions were, perfect, the sun shining brightly and warmly with the gentlest of breezes. The track and appointments were in splendid order and fields of good quality. Outstanding features of the racing were the wins of Silvermine in the Thompson Handicap, Lady Pam in the St. Leger, and of Cadland and Bronze Eagle. There was a large attendance, though below the average ot recent years, and considering the conditions a totalisator decrease of 33 1-3 per cent, was satisfactory.

The win of Lady Pam in the St. Leger was of outstanding merit. She ran right from the rear of the field into a prominent forward position In two furlongs in the middle stages of the race, and was disputing the lead entering the straight. This early call upon her reserve powers almost brought about her defeat, as King March came at her very solidly, and it was only rare courage'-and fitness that stood to Lady Pam in the finish.. Silvermlne’s success in the Thompson Handicap was a general surprise, and it was a good indication of how unreliable track work sometimes can be. Silvermine has always been one of our best sprinters, having in .his career won the C.J.C. Stewards’ Handicap, and run second in the Auckland Raijway Handicap. He also has succeeded in winning over nine furlongs, and with weights round about 8.0 to 8.8 has proved one of the smartest horses in the Dominion. Great Three-year-old. New Zealand’s leading three-year-old, Karapoti, enhanced his already, great reputation by the manner in which he accounted'for the North Island Challenge Stakes. As usual, he nfaSe all the running, and Lady Quex was the only one to cause him any trouble. He carried the full 111 b. penalty, and in running Imin. 25}sec. for the seven furlongs, he was

only a fraction outside the ‘race record, Imin. 25sec., held jointly by Silver Link (1921), Gascony (1927), and Reremoana (1928). Another outstanding performance was that of the two-year-old Bronze Eagle, who spreadeagled his opponents, several of- whom have been winning good races during the season. Bronze Eagle was making only his second appearance in public, his first start having been an unplaced performance behind Hunt the Slipper on Boxing Day. He is a handsome youngster, and a bold galloper, who should win plenty of races. The attendance, while large, was not up to the usual average, and the totalisator receipts, as expected, showed a substantial dcline. The figures for the day were £36,712/10/-, compared with £52/295/10/on the corresponding day last year, a decrease of £15.583. A poor start was made by a five-horse field in the opening event, and considering all conditions the result of the day was satisfactory. Air Laddie Easily. In the five-horse race for the Highweight Handicap the favourite, Air Laddie, scored a comfortable win. Pat’s Boy put a big break on the others in the first half, but Air Laddie and Mister Gamp were just behind him entering the straight. Air Laddie always had the measure of Mister Gamp in the run home, and beat him by threequarters of a length. Pat’s Boy was three lengths away third, then Money Mint and Hymgreat together. Air Laddie was always' going well, and he has improved a lot lately. Mister Gamp should improve with' the race. It was a very disappointing field for a £2OO stake, and the totalisator pool was less than £2OOO. Good, Game Lady Pam. There was a terrific struggle for the red riband in the St. Leger between the hot favourite, Lady Pam, and King March. Rare courage and peak of condition landed the filly a winner; she'had been freely used a long way from home. Pewa made the pace from Rosshire, Ball Dress, and Zephyrus, Lady Pam in the rear with Chief Link. Pewa led past the mile and into the back stretch from Jayson, Ball Dress, Rosshire, and King March. Lady Pam made a forward move near the seven, followed by Chief Link, but the latter was steadied. A little later Ball Dress fell back, and the order past the five and on to the turn was Pewa and Lady Para from Rosshire and King March, Ball Dress making up ground again. Pewa and'Lady Pam led into the straight from King March and Ball Dress. Lady Pam drew out, but' was attended by King March, and it was soon apparent that he was going to put up a strenuous light. He closed on Lady Pam with a furlong to go, and with both riders hard at it they became locked in a head-and-head battle. King March had the race won fifty yards off the post, but Lady Pam stuck heroically, and lasting just the least bit better, beat King March by a nose, the majority having to await the judge’s verdict before attaining certainty. Pewa was five lengths away third, .with Bail Dress fourth, fol-, lowed at intervals by Applcdore, Chief Link, and Rosshire. Lady Pam’s performance was high class, especially in view ot the confident manner in which she was handled. King March's running was surprisingly good, and was a substantial improvement on his past record. Pewa ran a good race, and so did Ball Dress. The others were well beaten. Rosshire, who" was sore prior to the opening of the meeting, broke down in the race. A One-horso Race. - There was only horse in the (wo-yenr-old race, and that was Bronze Eagle. He was one of the first away, with Hampden, Psychologist, Solvent, and Fair Weather. Once the straight was readied Bronze Eagle galloped right away, and won by live or six lengths from High Comedy and Oratorinn, who dead-heated, halt a length

in front of View Halloa. Then came Curie, Fair Weather, and Psychologist. The winner, who was having his second race, showed iiims'elf to be a brilliant colt, and he never gave anything a chance. High Comedy put up a good race, as he drew 20 at the., barrier, and was interfered with at the start. Oratorian, finishing strongly, just caught him on the post. View Halloa ran a good race, while Psychologist, Fair Weather, and Solvent showed speed. The winner, however, was in a class by himself. Silverniine’s Thompson. Another Thompson Handicap went to the credit of a sprinter when Silvermine beat Laughing Prince in a close finish. Silvermine was always well placed, but Laughing Prince had to make up several lengths. At the start Mount Boa and Black Duke were squeezed back,, others slow away being Full Feather, Richfield, and My Own. Arrow Lad was first out, but Refresher sobn hit the front, and led early from Arrow Lad, Silvermine, Royal Parade, Monalof, and Pakltere. At the end of a furlong and a half Pakltere had taken charge, and was soon out by herself from Refresher, Arrow Lad, Silvermine, Royal Parade, Paganelli, and Monalof, then Historic, Laughing Prince, and Eaglet. Pakltere led round tho turn and into the straight from Refresher, Silvermine, Arrow Lad, Paganelli, Royal Parade, Eaglet, and Laughing Prince. This was the order into line, where Silvermine and Arrow Lad soon had charge, with Laughing Prince throwing out a determined challenge. LaugMng Prince came ou solidly, and was a neck in front with a hundred yards to go. Weight then told, ’and Silvermine finished on the inner to beat him by half a head, with Arrow Lad a short length back third. Mount Boa was fourth, followed by Historic, Eaglet, Black Duke, Monalof, and Refresher. It was a fine contest, with the honours to Laughing Prince, who made a great bid under his 9.11, and may have won had his rider delayed the run just a little longer. However, he was a good way back, and as the opportunity offered he took advantage of the opening. Silvermine was always likely to bo in the money, and Arrow Lad ran a good honest race. Mount Boa, after a slow beginning, and Historic, were both finishing on, as also was Black Duke. Eaglet was in the middle of the field all the way and was never dangerous, and Paganelli, fairly well up for six furlongs, was then beaten. The winner drew 3, Laughing Prince 9, and Arrow Lad 1. Brilliant Karapoti. Karapoti justified Ills hot favouritism in the North Island Challenge Stakes by winning nicely from Lady Quex in fast time. Asplan and Hunting Cry were first out, Esteem missing the jump away. Karapoti ran up at the end of a furlong, and led from Lady Quex, then the bunch, headed by Hunting Cry. The leading pair gradually drew away, and the race was between them. Lady Quex had the drop on Karapoti, but he was too good for her, though she made him do his best at the finish to beat her by half a length. Hunting Cry was four or five lengths back third, with Toxcuma fourth, then Aspian and Gay Court. Karapoti won brilliantly, and this is probably the best performance of his career. Lady Quex had an exceptional chance' to beat him, but he. was too good. Hunting Cry ran well, and so did Toxcuma, who was having his first race since the Auckland summer meeting. None of tho two-year-olds was good enough, and Esteem In particular ran a very bad race. Simba In Form. Simba maintained his recent improved form, and won the hack mile practically all the way, ea'sily holding off a strong challenge at the finish by the .favourite, Chief Joy. The Sun and Sailor's Love were very slow away, Chief Joy, Simba, Parysla, and Shatter showing out first. When well settled down Simba led from Dennod, Chief Joy, Spear Lad, Saltpot, and Hawkshaw, and. this was the order into, the straight. Sintbn came on and beat Chief Joy by a length, with Hawkshaw two lengths back third, then Playground and Shatter, well up. The bunch came in headed by Spear Lad, Dennod, Joie de Vai, and Saltpot. It was a good thing for Simba, who has struck his right form at last. Chief Joy ran a good race. He changed his ground suddenly in the last furlong, but it probably did not affect the result. Hawkshaw made up a lot of ground!to run third, and Playground finished well. Shatter ran a fair race. Cadland’s Solid Finish. Cadland had his revenge on Autopny in the open sprint, comfortably reversing positions the last time they met on the course in January. Cadland was handy throughout, and well placed for his finishing run, smothered the opposition at tho finish. Arlkinui and Royal Routine showed out first, and led to the course proper from Autopay, Lineage, and Cadland. Autopay took the lead two furlongs from home, but Cadland wore him down and wou by a length. Havering was half a length away third, with True Shaft next, then Limerick, in front of the bunch, headed by Arlkinui, Tenterdcn, and Royal Routine, with Lineage last. Cadland was a solid favourite, and fully justified it. He is a good one. Autopay ran a good race, and Havering finished witli a strong run from the rear. Limerick ran a good race, and if he stands is not done yet. Arlkinui, Royal Routine, and True Shaft showed speed, but were not good enough. Lineage was prominent early, but received a bump turning into line, and as shp is small it settled her chance. Favourite Wins Last. Pythla, favourite in the concluding hack sprint, drew 16, but she was always well up, and with Kazan led to the straight from Hot Tea, Tea Queen, and Winsome Hind. Kozan still had charge at the last furlong, but Pythia drew away and won by a length. There was a great finish for second, Tea Queen sticking on best and beating Glen Rossie by a head, with Kozan another head away. Then came Tobaccoland, Leisure, Winsome Hind, Little Thrush, Rothen, and Hunting Call. Pythia, who had not raced since the Manawatu Christmas meeting, where she had Cadland behind her, won brilliantly. Tea Queen ran to form, and Kozan showed up in excellent stylo for a newcomer to racing, being beaten only in the last strides by seasoned horses. He is a lialfBrother to Rabbi. Glen Rossie ran a great race, and in another few strides would have been second. Epbialtes bolted a mile and a quarter before the race, and this settled his chance.
