M. Mowlem, S.M., at the Napier Police Court on Wednesday morning. Senior-Sergeant Stark stated that after the quake there was an agreement entered into between the licensees that no liquor should be provided till further notice. As time went on, however, some of the licensees grew impatient, the present charge being as a result of this. His barman,. R. D. Moffitt, was charged with supply liquor and pleaded guilty also. Mr. H. B. Lusk stated that there was good excuse for the action. . A number of men working among the ruins, covered with" brick-dust, could not get anything to drink, the water not being available, and they appealed to the defendant to let them have a glass of beer, to which he complied. The breach really was a very minor matter and there was no talk of anyone over-refreshing. The defendant had worked like a Trojan. “This is the first time in my life that, with a plea of guilty, I have convicted and discharged under the Licensing Act. However. I fee] that this case could not be treated fairly otherwise,” said his Worship.
