Lord Stamfordham, private secretary to the King, underwent an operation on Wednesday. It was successful, and his condition is stated to be satisfactory.
Advice has been received that the steamer Temple Pier, which ran aground on tlie Queensland coast, has been refloated, X2'id is continuing her voyage to Newcastle.
Upward of fifty unemployed have been undergoing drill instruction in a public park in Perth. The Government has issued an edict that the drilling must stop under penalty of from five to tea years’ imprisonment. *
British births last year numbered 649,430. giving the same ratio as in 1929, when the number was the lowest on record. Deaths totalled 455,397, the lowest on record. There was also a record low infant mortality. Marriages numbered 314,698. * * *
The steamer Beumohr. which went ashore at Prawle Point. Cornwall, a fortnight ago. has been refloated, and is anchored off Salcombe, according to a mesage received by the marine underwriters. She will be beached for examination before proceeding to Plymouth.
Cuts and Conversions. The Cunard Company is cutting staff salrries and directors' fees 10 per cent. The Peninsular and Oriental Company is converting the Mongolia and Moldavia into one class steamers.
Cold Grips Eufope. AU Europe is in tlie grip of intense cold. Thirty-three degrees of frost was recorded at Lyinpno. Nine feet of snow has fallen in Sweden. Four persons died of cold in England, and many deaths are reported on the Continent
