Surrender Made to Police VICTIM UNAWARE OF LOSS
Dominion Special Service. Masterton, March 12. The fact that he had forged and uttered a cheque so preyed on the mind of a man named John Williams that, although the theft of the cheque had not been detected, ho surrendered himself to. the police at Petone and made a confession. Williams appeared before Mr. J. Miller, S.M., in the Masterton Magistrates Court this afternoon, when evidence was given that he Injd been in the employ of Mr. A. J. T. Cox, a contractor, of Awatoitoi, and had stolen a cheque from him. This, according to tiie statement he subsequently made to the Petone police, filled in for £l2/10/-, and after signing Mr. Cox’s name successfully tendered it to a Masterton shopkeeper in Pffirinent for a pair of boots. He received £ll in change. This money he later spent also. Mr. Cox said that lie had not noticed that a form had been stolen from his cheque-book until informed by the pu> ic ®- “1 have nothing to say. I m guilty, accused told the court. He was committed to the Supreme Court at Wellington for sentence.
