DECIDING GALLOP

Nightmarch for Trentham SIGNS OF LAMENESS Dominion Special Service. Christchurch, March 12. At Riccarton this morning Nightmarch and True Shaft were sent the reverse way on the course proper from the winning post to the half-mile. True Shaft obtained a slight advantage at the start, and always had Nigh-tmarch doing his best. He finished half a length in front in 4Osec. Nightmarch did not hit out as satisfactorily as could be wished in view of his Trentham engagements. He has been under treatment during the past few days for trouble in front; thought- to have been brought abou-t by striking himself during his escapade on the track on Thursday last. On that occasion he showed signs of soreness on returning, but it was believed at the time that this was caused by a bruised heel. His gallop later in the morning and again at Motukarara on Saturday revealed the -ailment higher up, and he was allotted to-day's task to decide whether he should go to Trentham. As his trainer was satisfied with his condition on cooling down; Nightmarch went North to-night in company with True Shaft. BROOD MARES Sale at Trentham AN ELDERSLIE DRAFT Members of the farming community interested in breeding have an opportunity of securing brood mares, in foal to successful sires, at the thoroughbred sale at Trentham on Monday afternoon next. Owing to the conversion of Elderslie into a stud company, Mr. I. G. Duncan is disposing of his "mares, and thus buyers are being offered some of the best bred mares from the famous stud. Auto Pay, winner of the .valuable Ascot Vale Stakes, run at Flemington on Saturday, and Gallantic, third in the same race, were both bred by Mr. Duncan. In the Dominion four of the five leading two-year-olds, in La Poupee, Fairweather, Tea Chat, and Baroscope, were all similarly bred. The dams of the champions. Phar Lap and Karapoti, are examples of brood mare bargains. Of the dozen mares from Elderslie to be sold, three are on account of Captain B. H. Edkin-s, and nine are on account of Mr. Duncan. One of . the mares is La Paloma, dam of The Dove, winner of the Marlborough Cup last week. This mare is a three-quarter sister to Reremoana, and she is In foal to Paper Money.
