DRUNK IN CAR
Fine of £25 Imposed Wanganui, September 15. A fine of £25 was imposed upon Jack Hiroti at the Police Court to-day for being in charge of a motor-ear while in a state of intoxication. Mr. W. J. Treadwell appeared ■ for accused, and entered a plea of guilty. Senior-Sergeant McLean said that defendant attended the races on Saturday, and shortly after 6 o’clock was seen in the ear by Inspector Wilson, and a constable took him to the police station. He was under the influence of drink at the time. Mr. Treadwell said that defendant attended the races, and had several winnings. He was under the influence of drink, and regretted the offence. At the time of the offence he was sitting in the car and not driving. . He was convicted and fined £25, and was prohibited from holding a license for 12 months.
Cartridge. Explodes.—Colin Sloper, aged seven years, son of Mr. and Mrs. R. Sloper, of Amberley, was seriously injured on Saturday afternoon, when a bullet from a cartridge which exploded in a rubbish fire penetrated his abdomen, states a Press Association message from Christchurch. He was removed to hospital.
The British Broadcasting Company’s income from licenses last year was nearly £1,000,000. The number of licenses has increased by about 330,000, and now approaches 3,000,000. There are 16,000 free licenses for the blind. The number of SOS messages sent out during the year was 881, and of these just under half were successful.
