N.Y.K. LINE New Steamers for Australia Buras Philp and Co. have received advice from their principals that the Nippon Yusen Kaisha Australia Line is now to be maintained by larger steamers than hitherto employed, and will in future be operated by the steamers Kitano Maru, Atsuta Maru, and Mishima Maru. The first of these vessels arrived in Australia early this month. They are each of 8000 tons and are all well-equipped and comfortably accommodated ships for tropical eea travel. They are also of a good turn of speed (15 knots), enabling passengers plenty of time for Bight-seeing at ports of call on the way—viz., Thursday Island, Davao. Manila, Hong-Kong, Nagasaki, Kobe, Osaka, Nagoya. The final port is Yokohama. These steamers are well equipped for various climatic conditions particular care having been bestowed upon lighting and ventilation. With a few exceptions, all first and second-class state-rooms are outside rooms, with portholes opening direct on the sea. There are a few single-berth rooms, but the majority are two-berth rooms, and are comfortably equipped and unusually roomy, which provides for comfort. They have spacious promenade decks, thus offering every facility for deck sport during the voyage, and all public rooms are tastefully decorated. The dimensions of the Kitano Maru are: Tonnage 8000 tons, length 474 feet, breadth 55 feet, depth 31 feet, built at Nagasaki. Passenger accommodation is provided for about 89 first-class, 32 second-class, 20 third-class, and 100 steerage! The Kitano Maru is due at Brisbane on September 6, Sydney on the Sth and Melbourne on the 13th, and sails from Melbourne on September 17, Sydney on the 24th, and Brisbane on the 26th. The improvement in the Australian service, by which the N.Y.K. Line provides the largest steamers trading between Australia and Japan, is in keeping with the progress of the N.Y.K. Line, as recently the company placed various new steamers on their world-wide routes—viz., OnentCalifornia service fast motor-ships: Cluchibu Maru, Tatsuta Maru. and Asama Maru, all of which are 17,000 tons gross; Japan-Europe service: Terukuni Maru of 12,000 tons, Yasukuni Maru (to be commissioned during this month), of L-. 000 tons; Orient-Seattie service: Hikawa Mani and Hiye Maru, each of 11,000 tons, and Heian Maru (to be commissioned next December), also of 11,000 tons: Sonth American West Coast service: Helyo Maru, of 9500 tons.
