’PLANE SAVES VALUABLE HOURS That aviation is destined to play an iinporatut part'in the commercial development of New Zealand was exemplified on Thursday, when the Western Electric Company chartered a Hamilton Airways aeroplane for a “hop" to Hawera. where urgent repairs were to be carried out to a “talkie” machine, which was installed at the Grand Opera House injhat town. Owing to a transformer, a vital piece of mechanism, without which the “talkie" machine would be useless, being burnt out. a new transformer was ordered to be dispatched from Wellington at ttie earliest possible moment. In order to have the machine functioning so as not to interrupt the schedule, motor transport was considered out of the question, so the services of a “moth" ’plane were requisitioned. Piloted by Captain Bolt, who was accompanied by Mr. W. G. Leatham, service manager of the Western Electric Company, the aeroplane left Wellington at 2.30 p.m. yesterday, and arrived at its destination at 4.30, the approximate distance of 160 miles being covered in two hours, creditable going. Repairs to the “talkie” machine were duly effected, and the programme proceeded according to schedule.
