Services celebrating the jubilee of the Convent of the Sacred Heart were held to-day and were attended ny leaders of the Roman Catholic Church' of New Zealand in addition to a large number of priests f rom all-parts of-, the Dominion. There-, -were several- -pres- > ent who had attended-the ceremony- -of ■ laying the foundation stone fifty- years-. • ago, notably Archbishop Redwood, who performed the ceremony. A striking tribute was’paid to the" great work the nuns had accomplished. At the opening of the Convent/there were fifty pupils, but to-day the roU'' number was 230.

Pontifical High Mass was celebrated in the morning, Bishop Brodie (Christchurch)'. being, the celebrant. ' A stirring address was delivered by . Archbishop Redwood jn the. afternoon, at a big open-air function held by the Convent Old. Girls’ Association,, at . which commemorative. medals were. presented-to the ladies who were pres- ■ ent at the laying of the foundatfon.. stone. . i ■ In the evening Sacred Heart. School.. old girls and St Anne’s Guild made presentations to the nuns, in recogni-. tion of the--work being done at the Convent ’ ■ ■ -. WELLINGTON ROSE SHOW. At the Wellington - Rose • Show -much .- interest was taken in the ladies’ ed tables. These were, first judged by the. judge, whose decision was. .not an- ' nounccd until after the show, and also by popular ballot. Thirteen tables were entered. . The results were as follow: — Mrs. H. D. Bennett, No. 5, first judge, second popular vote; decorated with scarlet larkspur, pink sweet peas, statiee arid maidenhair fern. Miss M. Wilson, No. 11; First popular vote; decorated .with pink sweet pea, catmint, maidenhair-fern and ixias. Mrs. K. MacDonald, No. 13-; Second judge, third popular vote; decorated with Shirley poppies and London’s pride. The winner of the Wellington Challenge Trophy was Mr. J. Ball, Lower Hutt, not Mr. James-Bell, as reported before.-

The annual appeal is being' made firij Christmas gifts for the ex-soldier patients under treatment at the Pukeora Sanatorium. As in past years this work, is being attended to by ■ Mrs.- Margaret Mercer and other" Red Cross workers-in Dannevirke, who will collect the goods and deliver them to, the. sanatorium on December 18. ; Gifts of books,. playing cards, magazines, chessmen, cigarettes, matches, chocolate, gramophone records, cake, fruit or mon-ey donations -should be forwarded to Mrs. Margaret Mercer, 33 Alma Street, Dannevirke, by whom' • they w’ill-be gratefully received irr tha ■ name of the Red Cross ■ Society and delivered to the proper quarter. Through-.-out the year members -of the society pay their . regular visits to the patients, .. but at Christmas time, a. special appeal is made with a view, of introducing an extra ray of happiness into the lives of the men.
