THE RACING WORLD

FEILDING JUBILEE MEETING OPENS TO DAY

A REVIEW OF THE FIELDS

(By “The Watcher.”)

The Jubilee meeting of the Feilding Jockey Club will open to-day and conclude on Monday. Fields for to-day’s racing are first-class, both with regard to quantity and quality, and there should be some excellent racing. Feilding lias not had the heavy rain that has been experienced at this end of the island, and on Thursday morning Paganelli ran five furlongs in Imin. Isec. Drizzling conditions prevailed there yesterday, but the track will take a lot more rain before becoming soft, and yesterday afternoon trainers reported the going as in excellent order. The first race is timed .to start at 11.30 a.m, and the Railway Department lias made the usual adequate arrangements for district special trains. Wellington patrons can reach the course each day in time for the first event by the daylight Limited, leaving Thorndon at 7.52 a.m., returning from Feilding at 8.2 p.m. The day’s programme is as follows: —

attention, but Red Bank should be prominent. On a soft track the chances of Horomea and Beaumont would be improved. Red Bank and Elysianor should go .well.

Lady Gen ..SO Form points to False Scent, Bari' and Black Acre. Pedestal has a good reputation, but False Scent should be hard to beat.. FEILDING JUBILEE CUP, of COJ BOVS.

lent one from all points of view—except that of those who are trying to pick it. Rabbi stands out on form, but Bright Glow should race well, and Havering may be the best lightweight.

Hunting Boy 8 2 Betty... 0 1 Paganelli promises to start a warm favourite in the Stakes, and form warrants it. Ceremony should prove his most dauger-

Fiue Aero ... 711 Recent running points to Masher, My Own, Make Up, Chopin, and Gold Like,; while Fine Acre was not very well handled at Levin. Masher and Make Up appeal most.

Banket 7 3 Interest is lent to the sprint by the presence of the South Island pair, Silver Paper and Aspiring. If the latter runs up to Stewards’ Handicap form she would be hard toi dispose of. Arrow Lad, Goshawk, First Money and Gold Cure, have to be considered. A lot of people appear to be waiting for Goshawk. Well-handled he would be prominent. Aspiring and First Money should go well.

l.imosln .... • 7 itunonai . • <« On recent form Clarendon, Sylvan De l. •lust Sb, Limosin, Rule Brittania, hPP eal in the hack sprint. Knightlike struck himself badly at Trentham, and as he was eased up, may need a race. Just So and Clarendon seem a likely pair. KIWITEA HANDICAP, of 250 sovs.

Otairi, King Midas, Arikipui, and High Faintin’ will be the best backed in the concluding event. On performances Otairi is not at all badly off against his most dangerous opponents as regards weight. WEATHER AT FEILDING OUTLOOK FOR MORE RAIN Dominion Special Service. Feilding, November 20. Rain has been falling for several days and will soften the track for the Feilding Jubilee races to-morrow. The present outlook is for more rain.

NOTES AND COMMENTS

(By "The Watcher.”) “O.K.”—Sir Donald was a chestnut gelding by Advance —Lizette. He raced as a three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, eleven and twelve-year-old. He won his first race as a 5-year-old, and it was in this year (1913-14) that he started jumping. His last race that season was an unplaced performance in the AVhakatu Hurdles at the Hawke’s Bay Winter meeting. At 0 years he started 16 times, and won five races, was five times second, and four times third. He mixed flat running with hurdling. He .won the Rongotai Hack Hurdles at the Feilding J.C. meeting, was second in the Te Matai Hurdles at the Manawatu Summer, and won the First Hack Hurdles at the Marton J.C. Summer. In the autumn he was second in the hack hurdles at Woodville, won the Maranui Hack Hurdles at Napier Park, the Kawa Kawa Hurdles at the Feilding J.C. Easter, and the Karere Hurdles at the Manawatu Autumn. In 1915-16 as an S-year-old he also started in the Grand National Hurdles, won by Hurakia. He did not start again until the next winter, when he ran unplaced in the Century and May Hurdles at Wanganui, and in the Final Hurdles at Wellington. In 1916-17 he ran second in the Spring Hurdles at Feilding, and also started in the ‘Cheltenham Hurdles. He was third in the Tokomaru Hurdles at the Manawatu Summer meeting, and also started in the Te Matai Hurdles. His last start, produced a second in the Kimbolton Hurdles at the Feilding J.C. Easter. In 1917-18 he did not race. In 1918-19 he ran five times, and was unplaced in the, Mangatarata and Karamu Hurdles at the Hawke’s Bay Autumn, and also ran in the ‘Woodlands Hack Steeples on the same course in the winter. In his last year, 12 years, (1919-20) he also ran in the Dannevirke and Glengarry Steeples in the spring, and in the Taradale. Hurdles 'at Napier Park. He was second in the' Spring Hurdles and unplaced in the Cheltenham Hurdles at Feilding. He was second in the Tokomaru Hurdles at the Manawatu Summer, and also ran in the ■Kawa Kawa Hurdles at the Feilding J.C. Easter. He finished his racing career with a dead-heat in the Hack Steeples on the opening day of the Wanganui Winter meeting; ■ ■

.There is a -disposition to regard the chances of. Pedestal very highly for the Aorangi Trial Plate at the Feilding meeting, but it would be as weir to remember 'that False Scent has had the racing ex'perience, ■whereas this will be Pedestal's first essay in public (says-the ‘Wanganui "Chronicle”). The half-brother to Commendation has improved a great deal since August, when he left on the trip to Sydney.

The Birkenhead mare Link Up lias produced a foal to Weathervane, and Silver Arc. by Marblp Areh, from Link Up, has foaled to Arrowsmith.

•It is understood that the two youngsters bought at the Doncaster (England) sales by Mr. J. M. Samson, and shipped to the Dominion early in October, arc to go to R. C. Keeper at Orari. The Auckland Double.

According to latest information. Chide is a lone favourite for the Auckland Cup, being some points in advance of Nigbtniareh, Paquito, In the Shade, Corinax, Historic, and Prodice, who are grouped next. For the Railway Handicap. Lady Quex, Silver Paper, First Money, Cimabuc, Siiverinine, Ceremony, Paganelli, Toxeuma, Eaglet,

and White Fang, are in most demand. Handicaps for both events are due on Wednesday.

The Invercargill trainer, F. AV. Ellis, in detailing his experiences in Victoria to "Sir Modred,” of the Southland “Times,” states that after his arrival in Melbourne he naturally became interested in the riding of the crack horseman AV. Duncan. At first he was not impressed with the ability of Duncan, but later on he realised’ the superlative excellence of his horsemanship. Ellis states that the idol of Melbourne racegoers is a vigorous jockey, a rider who thinks like a flash, and with him to think is to act, and where he can get his horse's head in a crush he is likely to get through while his daring has to be seen to be fully realised.

After racing at Otaki on the opening day, Auctioneer was found to be a trifle sore, owing, it was found, to a muscle in a shoulder being slightly strained. That was why he was not started on. the second day, and it was deemed advisable to allow him to drop out of his Feilding engagement. However, the Gasbag gelding is getting on all right, and will be prepared for the Christmas and New Year campaign.

Latest reports concerning In the Shade are not reassuring for the gelding is said to be still feeling the effects of the injury received in the New Zealand Cup.

F. D. Jones will race Paquito during the holidays at Auckland or Manawatu, but he will not make a final decision until the weights are available. Paquito will be accompanied by Limerick’s two-year-old brother, Dunraven, who is working along quite satisfactorily, giving promise of developing into a useful horse, when he has had some racing experience.

Pink Coat to Spell. According to reports from AVashdyke, the crack Hunting Song colt Pink Coat appears to walk quite soundly, and his trainer E. J. Ellis, lias great hopes that ho will make a good recovery from the injury he sustained during the running of the Harcourt Cup at Trcntham. Pink Coat is to be turned out on his owner’s property. T. Webster’s Progress.

The young horseman, T. AVcbstcr, who was injured at Ricearton on the first day of the recent meeting, is still an inmate of Lewisham Hospital. He has made very satisfactory progfess towards recovery and is expected to be able shortly to leave for his home at Otaki. According to medical opinion it will bo some months before AVebster will be sufficiently fit to resume race-riding.

Not for Feilding. . , It was the intention of T. Garment to go on to Feilding following on the Te Kuiti meeting, but Lady’s Boy falling in the last race called for a change in the programme, and rather than risk the Possibility of doing him harm the Ellerslie trainer decided to return home. AVrtli the other trip in mind Lady’s Boy was allowed to forfeit his engagement in the Borough Handicap at Takapuna and he will thus not race on the first day. This nuggety little fellow has come to no harm as the result of his fall, and he will be worked in view of Monday’s racing at the Shore.

Off to France. . Signed up by Frank Bullock to ride in France for his patron, M. Jaques ‘AVittouck. the A’ictorian jockey AV. Scanlon will leave Australia by the Grama on January 7. The engagement is for one season. Scanlon has been riding in Australia with a fair (measure of success, and he includes in his ’winning rides the Caulfield Cup on Textile. He is expected to do well in France. It is not known what retainer the jockey will receive, but it is thought to be a substantial one to induce Scanlon to leave Victoria. Legionnaires do AVeli.

A brilliant two-year-old himself, the English stallion Legionnaire is already making a name for himself as a sire of speedy juveniles (says-a Sydney writer). His owner, Mr. Percy Miller, must feel gratified with the horse's successful start at the stud, as the oldest of Legionnaire’s stock are two-year-olds, and so early in the season he has been advertised by the speedsters First Legion, in Melbourne, and Frontier, in Sydney. Frontier won stylishly at Randwick on November 16, arid is likely to develop into a much better galloper than his half-sister. Silver Sash. The latter was successful as a juvenile at Moorefield last season, and recently won a 14.2 Handicap, at Kensington.- Frontier is bred to go fast. Apart from being a son of Legionnaire, he is out

of Silver Lining, a sister to the Oakleigh Plate winner, Cielo, and is closely related to Midilli, Outlook, Nautical and Beragoon. Sir. T. H. Lowry at the last sales purchased for 725 guineas a chestnut colt by Legionnaire from Bees in Amber. The youngster has not yet raced. The Heart of the Racehorse.

Mollison, who won the whole of his seven engagements at two years old in the season of 1927-28, but who, though showing pace, failed to stay, has formed the subject of consideration by Dr. Stuart McKay, who holds advanced opinions on the heart question. According to a Melbourne writer, Dr. McKay diagnosed Mollison's case to be that of heart pressure, and the owner of Mollsion, Mr. E. M. Pearce, having been convinced that an operation for blood-letting would be beneficial to Mollison, the operation is to be performed. This will take the form of draining Mollison’s blood by some six quarts. Needless to say, the result of the operation is awaited with keen interest. AU continuing well with Mollison, the gelding will be raced again in the autumn. The heart question bearing on racehorses is also receiving attention in America. The following is an excerpt from a New York journal:— “Modern racing stables are fitted out not only with every convenience I’or the comfort of the thoroughbreds they house, but also with devices of modern surgery and medicine. Now comes the ‘equine stethoscope, similar in principle to what doc-' tors use. to listen in on the human heart, but equipped to measure and record a racehorse’s heart beats. -‘More speed from contented ponies’ is the slogan of the racing. man. He knows his horseflesh must be physically well and mentally at peace ‘ if he is to capture coveted trophies and purses. It is important to know the endurance of individual racers; exactly the strain a race has upon their vital organs. AVhen Blue Larkspur outdistanced a field of prize steppers in the recent American classic at Arlington Park, Illinois, the horse was hurried to its stall and the heartgauging device used. Other entrants were similarly examined, and it was found that each horse's condition as shown by the machine had been reflected in his performance on the track. Race-track veterinarians are equipping themselves with the new instrument at many tracks. They believe it will become an important adjunct of the sport—in addition to a valuable tool to the kits of surgeons who treat horses employed at more prosaic, but just as important tasks.” French Horse for Australia.

The colours of the Belgian sportsman, M. Jaques AVittouck, will shortly be seen on metropolitan courses (says a Sydney writer). , The Australian Frank Bullock, who is established in France as private trainer to M. AVittouck, has persuaded his patron to setfd a horse to Australia to race, and he will afterwards bo sent to the stud. Accordingly, the French horse, Lorrain, by Sweeper from L’Oubliue, will arrive in Melbourne by the steamer Port lluon. The horse has been consigned to Maekinnon and Cox Proprietary, and after undergoing the period of quarantine and resting from the trip he will be put into training by F; Lewis. Lorrain is aged eight years. French horses have been tried in Australia with varying degrees of success.

Kenilworth proved to be one of the best, both as a stayer and as a sire of stayers. Among his progeny are AVolarol and Kennaquhair, and the jumpers Kentle and Moss Trooper. Other horses are Shepherd King, Cyklon, sire of Trivalve, Tidal, Rionscup. and Aprenmnt, who figured as a successful sire in New Zealand nearly 40 years ago. TAKAPUNA MEETING OPENS TO-DAY WEATHER SHOWERY LAST NIGHT Dominion Special Service. Auckland, November 29. There was, contrary to expectations, little doing at Takapuna this morning. Crimestor beat Orchus on the course proper over six furlongs in Imin. 22 3-ssec. Briar Root sprinted three furlongs in 38 4-5, and Lady Quex just beat Duellona over four in 50sec. A. Tinker is mentioned as Duellona’s pilot in the Takapuna Plate. The weather is still showery, and conditions are uncertain for to-morrow. If It clears by morning the going will be quite satisfactory. Racing opens with the Melrose Stakes, in which (if Taurua is reserved for the Ponut Handicap) Alloy, Clopton and Measurer may be fancied. Golden AA’edding and Sir Archie represent the best class in the Tiri High-Weight and AVenday may also be in demand. The Borough Handicap should be a fine race, with Prince Vai, Refresher and Royal Doulton the popular picks. The Alison Cup field is an.even one, but the favourite may come from Prodice, Corinax, and True Blood. There are several improvers in the Cambria .Handicap, but form may result in Sight Draft,. Orapal and Oil King getting most support. The Takapuna Plate will provide spirit-, ed betting. Storm Fiend, Briar Root, Leitrim, Mauriaena, Valimond, Crimestor, Tetrachate, Vali and Duellona will all have good followings, and in a hard race Leitrim, Vali and Volimond may be in most demand. , , . Taurua should be a good favourite for the Ponui Handicap, with Gay Cockade and Red Lion next in request. For the Cheltenham Handicap Vallar and Lady Quex arc likely to dispute favouritism, with Lucy . Rose fancied most of the others.
