ATTEMPT TO ROB BANK
HEAVY SENTENCES ON THREE MEN
(Rec. November 28, 9 p.m.) Sydney, November 28. Convicted at the criminal court of attempting while armed to rob the Wollahra branch of the Government Savings Bank, Charles Passmore, 57, Joseph Williams, 29. and William Poe, 24, were each sentenced to twelve years’ imprisonment. [The manager and an assistant of the Woolahra branch of the Bank of New South Wales were held up by three masked men. The assistant dived for a revolver under the counter and was shot in the leg. The men then fired at the manager, a bullet grazing his arm. Apparently nonplussed by the unexpected resistance of the bank staff the men raced away without attempting to raid the bank’s funds, and escaped in a motor-ear, the engine of which was running in front of the bank. The manager and his assistant were later rewarded with gifts of £lOO and £5O respectively for their plucky resistance.]
