AMERICAN TOURISTS
PALATIAL LINER AT SYDNEY MESSAGE OF GOODWILL FOR NEW ZEALAND (Rec. November 25, 9.15 p.m.) Sydney, November 25. Gaily decked with bunting on her maiden voyage from San Francisco, the palatial Matson liner Malolo, with 358 American tourists on board, reached Sydney to-day after called at Perth, Port Adelaide, and Melbourne. Everyone on board the luxurious liner had desired to see Sydney Harbour at its best, but it was a murky morning, with sunshine only at intervals, while there were rain-showers during the afternoon. The tourists were greeted in the heartiest manner, ferry sirens, and steamer whistles blowing. There was a huge crowd at the wharf. Scores of limousines took the visitors round the city sights of interest, and then to Government House, where the Governor, Admiral de Chair, shook hands with nearly 300 guests under a magnificent Moreton Bay fig tree, which all greatly admired. Leaders of Australian commerce and Industry had luncheon on board the Malolo with the captains of great American industries, quiet-voiced men who had built up fortunes in commercial activities, ranging from steel, newspapers, railways, lemons, laundries, fish, oil, milk, electric signs, and cafes to department stores. All these people said they had brought a message of good-will to Australia and New Zealand.
The civic authorities and other public bodies have arranged a big round of entertainment and 'sight-seeing for the Malolo’s happy and affluent complement.
