FOREIGN AND DOMESTIC POLICY

REVIEW BY MR. MACDONALD WAY OF PEACE ADVANCED THE COAL INDUSTRY (British Official Wireless.) (Rec. November 25, 5.5 p.m.) Rugby, November 24. The Prime Minister, in a letter to Mr. Aitchison, Lord Advocate for Scotland, who Is the Socialist candidate in the Kilmarnock byelection, reviewed his foreign and domestic policy, and re- e ferred to the introduction of legislation dealing with the coal industry. Mr. MacDonald said: “The way of peace has been laid within the past six months further than ever it has been, and we are now hard at work preparing for the Five Power Naval Conference, which is to meet in London In January to carry this to a successful Issue. “The conditions of the coal industry will be dealt with next We strove hard to get an agreement between the owners and miners which woujd have given fair play to workers overworked and scantily paid, but we were unsuccessful in our efforts. We shall proceed with legislation which we believe will commend Itself to the great body of impartial people and which has the support of the general body of miners and a not inconsiderable section of the owners. Great will be the service done to the whole community by any Government which will undo the mischief of the late Government and put coalmining on a satisfactory economic footing and establish within it conditions and machinery for industrial peace and fair play."
