TOWN SHORT OF WATER

POSITION AT MASTERTON Dominion Special Service. Masterton. November 25. ' No rain has fallen in Masterton for the past week, with the result that garden hoses have been working overtime, so much so that the Borough Council has imposed restrictions on the uye of all hoses, whether the supply is meter or not. , Hosing is now permitted only between the hours of 0 a.m. and S a.m. and between 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. The borough engineer, Mr. C. R. Mabsou, stated that the water supply at Lansdowne was very low, and at 9 p.m. on Saturday the reservoirs were empty, though they partly filled during the night. It was most essential that these reservoirs should be fully maintained in order that any outbreak of tire might be coped with, and also to serve the higher levels of the borough. At one time on Saturday, he mentioned, the pressure dropped to 271 b. Unless the restrictions were complied with prosecutions would follow. The necessity for care in using water has also been emphasised by the superintendent of the Fire Brigade. Mr. A. E. Freeman, who has pointed out that a reduction of the water supply for firefighting purposes will mean an increase in insurance rates. Unless the position improves it will be his duty to report to the Underwriters’ Association.
