Alarm felt at the increasing numbers of deer, chamois, thar. and so on, in parts of the hill country, that are not protected, has caused the Canterbury Sheepowners’ Union to decide to ask the Government to call a conference of representatives of acclimatisation societies and sheepowners in the South Island, and the Government departments interested, to discuss the question of controlling the animals in these areas. It is felt that the rapid increase of the deer calls for immediate and concerted action.
