HIS LAST VOYAGE
SAILOR’S DEATH AT 103 YEARS Wondering how it was that he could not get. about any more, although he was 100 years of age, George Ryan entered St. Joseph’s Home in Buckle Street three years ago. Yesterday he passed away at the age of 103. Born at Algoa Bay (South Africa) of a Boer mother and an Irish father, Ryan went to sea when a boy. He was several times shipwrecked—once on a desert island, where he eked out a meagre existence on shellfish and birds’ eggs. For the last 57 years he came to and went from New Zealand, and latterly had been working on the Wellington waterfront. His genial nature made him a favourite at the home. Ho died of sheer old age, although up to a fortnight ago he was hqle and hearty. Ryan remembered seeing Victoria crowned Queen of England.
