UPPER HUTT BOROUGH COUNCIL

FIRE SIREN TO BE SOUNDED EVERY WEEK DAY. The fortnightly meeting of the Upper Hutt Borough Council was held last night. The Slayer (Mr. P. Robertson) presided, and the following councillors were present: E. W. Cottle, C. L. A. Spearman, A. Howell. .1. Blewuian. W. Greig, M. Hood. G. H. Guthrie and J. O. Duff. A letter was received from the secretary to the Post Office stating that the council’s request for a public telephone could not be granted. Councillor Greig moved, and Councillor Hood seconded, that a letter be sent to the Postmaster-General requesting that a publie telephone be Installed at Upi>er Hutt and that Colonel T. W. McDonald. St.v.. member for the district, be asked to assist the council to secure the convenience. A letter was received from the chairman of the Wellington City and Suburban Water Board giving details of the report of tile committee set up to furnish a report on tlio method of apportioning the cost of constructing the proposed Wellington City and Suburban water supply scheme. On the motion of Councillor Duff it was resolved that a committee consisting of the Mayor, and Councillors Greig and Hood confer with representatives of Lower Hutt and I’etone Borough Councils as to !!»■ method of allocating the cost of carrying out the scheme. A letter was received from a resident of the borough complaining of cycles being ridden on footpaths in the borough. On the motion of the Mayor it was resolved that the letter be referred to the local police. It was decided that the lire siren be sounded at noon on week-days, as a test that the siren is in good order, and an indication to the public of the correct time. Councillor Hood asked if it were not possible to have the existing wooden bridges in Whiteman’s Valley road replaced wtb up-to-date two-way concrete bridges. It was decided that, as the approximate cost of the work would be about £401). it would be necessary to defer Ilio matter until next year, when provision could be made in the estimates lor the work.
