PALMERSTON WATER SUPPLY
LOAN PROPOSAL CARRIED ARTESIAN WELL AND NEW PIPES Dominion Special Service. Palmerston North, October 30. At a poll taken to-day the ratepayers of Palmerston North approved the Borough Council’s proposal to raise a special loan of £14,000 to sink an artesian well to augment the town’s water supply. Voting was more than two to one in favour of the loan, 1024 votes being recorded in favour of it and 405 against it. At every booth there was a majority in favour of the loan. The poll was one ot the poorest on record, only 1404 of the 5300 ratepayers on the roll exercising their right, lhere wen. only nine" informal votes. The loan of £14,000 which is to be raised will be used to construct and install a six-inch diameter artesian well and an underground cistern of 100,000 gallons capacity. Two electrically operated pumps will be installed and a pumphouse erected. Some reticulation work will be done, 9in. diameter mains being laid in Ruahine Street, a 12in. main in Featherston Street, and 18in. mains m Rangitikei Street. A sum for the purchase of the necessary land is also included in the loan. It is anticipated that this artesian water pumped into mains will considerably improve the water pressure, especially in the higher area at Terrace End.
