CITY AND SUBURBAN

HAPPENINGS IN AND ABOUT TOWN

An exceedingly rare incident happened yesterday. It was the rush hour, and everybody was going home to tea. A young lady boarded c car bound for Island Bay, at Vivian Street. She took a seat, and looking up to a man among the strap-hangers, said, “Thank you.”

Thanks to the good weather during October, the attendances at Te Aro baths show a decided improvement on what they were in October last year. The temperature of the water is improving, and is approaching 60 degrees.

In a reserved judgment, Gamble and Creed, Ltd., were fined £2 and costs by Mr. T. B. McNeil,. S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court yesterday, on a charge of bringing into the city for use, consumption, or' sale, milk purchased outside the city otherwise than under a license issued by the Wellington City Council.

It 7.40 last night, John Morrison, a seaman residing at the White Swan Hotel, was knocked down outside the Hotel Cecil by a motor-car. He was taken by a private car to the Free Ambulance station, and conveyed to the hospital after injuries to his left foot had been treated.

A grader was at work yesterday on the Crescent, between Carlton Gore and Grafton roads, and the condition of the road is much better from the motorists’ point of view. It will take a little time to settle down, however. The metal chips will soon -work in with the filling levelled' off by the grader.

When the motor-cycle and sidecar in which she was a passenger collided with a bicycle at the ‘unction of Russell Terrace and Waripori Street at 7 o’clock last night, Mrs. D. Wood, of 21 Matai Road, Lower Hutt, suffered a fracture of the right collar-bone, and also suffered from shock. She was attended to by the Free Ambulance and conveyed to hospital.

An application for the provision of counsel on his behalf was made in the Supreme Court yesterday by a man who was charged with committing an indecent assault. Accused told the Chief Justice (Hon. M. Myers), who was on the Bench, that he was not well educated in English, and would not know what he was saying. His Honour mentioned that when he appeared before the Lower Court in July he was represented by counsel. It was now too late to ask for counsel to be provided. Accused should have taken steps before. Accused said he had no money to pay for counsel, but His Honour decided that the case must proceed, observing to accused that he had the right to challenge six men called for jury sendee.

Where the slip occurred below Harbour View (and facing Church Street) during the winter, the face of the clay bank has been pared away to a safer batter than has hitherto existed, and a concrete retaining wall is about to be constructed. Work on the erection of the new Northland fire station, the contract for which has been secured by the Fletcher Construction Co., will commence next week. It is expected to be completed by the end of March. A fire alarm system linking up Karorl, Nel burn and the surrounding districts will be installed. A discovery was made at the Town Hall yesterday when preparing the hall for the Mothers’ League farewell to Their Excellencies Sir Charles and Lady Alice Fergusson. A quantity of foliage in large branches had been brought in by car from Upper Hutt for decorative purposes, and had been deposited in the hall. Hearing a twittering, some of the ladies examined one of the branches, and in the fork found a nest containing three fledgling green linnets. They were handed over to the caretaker, who will look after them until they are able to fly. An unusual trophy for competition in the annual snooker tournament is possessed by the Seatoun Bowling Club. It is a billiard cue mounted on a rest of its own. It was presented to the club four or five years ago by Mr. J. H. Owen, a well-known billiards enthusiast and member of the club. The cue was specially built in Manchester to the order and under the supervision of the great Melbourne Inman, one of the most brilliant players who ever graced a table, and for many years the world’s champion. The ash in the shaft was suspended in its rough state by a cord in the workshop of the maker for 18 years, so ensuring immunity from twisting or warp. The butt is unusual also, comprising ebony and snakewood in eight splices, and is of beautiful workmanship. So far the Government Loans Board has approved of certain of the works proposed to be done by the Wellington City Council under the new £32,000 unemployment loan. In other cases the Loans Board has referred them back for further information. One of the works which commends itself for immediate prosecution is the proposed new parking area at Day’s Bay—that triangular area of waste land on the corner of the main road and Ferry Road, for which the sum of £7OO was allocated. If this is to be made ready for the year-cnd holiday trafiic it should be put in hand at once as the danger to life and limb there will increase as the summer advances.
