LETTERS IN BRIEF
“I read your article, ‘More Trouble in Northland.’ very carefully, and must say that I think you have stated the facts very fairly indeed," writes “Disgusted Northlander.” “There is a point, however, which you do not seem to mention, and that is, who is responsible for this piece of work. ... If money is so plentiful that the council can afford to build up roads like this one it is about time the people took a stand. There are other places in and about the city crying out for attention, and we are being continually told that the council has no money. If the council has no money to burn, then why in the name of common sense is waste allowed to go on? Is the council satisfied that we are getting value for our money from the engineering department of the council? If not, then why not investigate and remedy the evil? If the staff is overworked, then get more engineers, pay more wages, but, for goodness sake, get satisfaction for the money we spend. . . .” “A Digger” suggests that the lot of the secretary of e Returned Soldiers’ Association could be made a little easier if the association had a small car to enable the secretary to get round to the various hospitals, etc., to cheer the unfortunate returned soldiers in those institutions. “Take. for. instance, a Saturday afternoon when workers in general cease work and enjoy their various recreations,” adds the correspondents—“the secretary of the R.S.A. visits first, the Ewart, then downhill and up to Victoria, and then a long climb to the Fever—three places set very wide apart, and visiting which entaiU much climbing. I can assure members of the association that if they could only see What their secretary hns to accomplish they would feel sorry for him. but he never complains, and is happy as long as he is able to cheer the unfortunate diggers. I sincerely hope this matter will be taken up and some good come of it.”
