The death of Mr. William Henry Smith, the well-known newspaper proprietor, who successively controlled the “Wairarapa News” (now “Times”), which he founded with a partner, the “Manawatu Times,” which he turned int a daily, and the “Rangitlkei Advocate,” of which he was editor and manager until his recent retirement, is announced by a Press Association telegram from Palmerston North. He was a. strong advocate of free trade, and in his early years a prominent Cricketer and swimmer. He is survived by a widow and four daughters. Two sons predeceased him, one (Lieut. K. G. S. Smith) being killed ,at Passchendaele. Mr. Smith was aged 75 years. Mr. Matthew Johnson, Deputy Mayor of Hastings, died there on Monday, at the age of 61, states a Press Association telegram. He was a resident in the town for nearly 40 years, during which time he took an active Interest in public affairs.
