LAND FOR SOLDIERS
INVESTIGATION IN AUSTRALIA STATE GOVERNMENTS CRITICISED (United Press Association.—By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.) (Rec. August 5, 7.50 p.m.) Melbourne, August 5. Mr. Justice Pike has completed an inquiry into soldier settlements on behalf of the Commonwealth Government. He severely criticises the State Governments for buying land unsuitable for soldier settlement, with the result that the majority of the soldiers had not the slightest chance of making a success. Mr. Juctice Pike’s report also condemns the political interference associated with the administration of soldiers’ holdings. The Commonwealth has loaned to date thirty-five millions sterling for soldier settlements.
