One of the ambergris seekers who visited Big Hellfire beach last week (states the Stewart Island correspondent of the “Southland Times”) stated that among the debris on the sand were a large number of thin bamboo poles all about loft, long. These poles were quite green, and evidently been cut fairly recently. They were not the usual whip variety used by whalers for flagging the carcasses of whales, but were cut at each end. It is nuzzling to know how they got there, and for what purpose they were intended.
