ATLANTIC RECORD
BRITISH RIVALS PLANNED London, July 24. The “Evening Standard” says that the Cunard Company has completed designs for a new super-liner capable of lowering the German liner Bremen’s record for the Atlantic trip It will be built immediately unless the Cunarder Mauretania regains the leadership. The Mauretania was recently fitted with new engines and condensers, which her engineers believe will enable her to reach 30 knots or over, whereas the Bremen’s highest average was 29.71 knots. It Is calculated that the new engines have added a knot to the Mauretania’s speed, and they have never beqn thoroughly tried out. The present contract for a new Cunarder will be given to Messrs. John Brown, of Clydeside, immediately it is evident that the Mauretania cannot defeat the Bremen.
Meanwhile work on the White Star Line’s Oceanic is being speeded up at Harland and Wolff's works at Belfast. She is of 60.000 tons, and will be electrically driven. She is expected to average 28 knots, which is higher than the Bremen’s average except on the last two days of the voyage.
