THE MODERN GIRL
SOME DISQUIETING CHARACTERISTICS
Dominion Special Service. Auckland, July 30.
“I have great respect for the modern girl, her character, and her capabilities, but there is a certain particular type which is discrediting her sex and bringing sorrow to many a home and parents.” The above remarks were made by Archbishop Averill at the annual meeting of the' Young Women’s Christian Association. He said he had been speaking to a lady who had referred to the horrible habit of “spotting.” It was as a result of that that girls lost their sense of decency and modesty, and in a desire to b independent they were kicking against morn] restraint and bringing discredit upon themselves. The Archbishop said that it was very important that women and girls should band themselves into associations in an endeavour to manifest a true type of Christian life. It was important that t’. ry should be given an opportunity to cultivate leadership, as a great need was leaders wh- would stand for the things that mattered. Until that was done there would be a difficulty in counteracting discrediting tendencies. “It is no use merely deploring these things.” said the Archbishop. “The antidote is the training of women and girls so that they will delight in things that are pure.”
