Mr. Melbourne Ward, whose official , appointment as honorary zoologist to the Australian Museum has just been announced, is the younger son of Mr. Hugh J. Ward, the well-known theatrical entrepreneur, of Sydney. He was born in the city whose name he bears in October, 1892. and for some years was successfully associated with the stage. But the call of science was too strong to be resisted, and since the year 1922. he has devoted practically the whole of his time and energy to research work in the field of marine biology. and especially that large section of it which is represented by the Crustacea. Mr. Ward lias travelled widelv in the pursuit of his subjects and liis work in South America, California.
