DELVING INTO THE PAST
Sir, —Reference by the Hon. T. M, Wilford to a letter alleged to have been sent in 1913 by Mr. E. A. James to supporters of the Reform Party recalls an interesting episode which happened just tiyo years previously—in November, 1911. At that time Sir Joseph Ward was Prime Minister, and his organisation sent to a number of supporters in the Marton district a letter, of which the following is a copy:— “Just a line to let you know that Sir Joseph Ward is passing through to-morrow (Tuesday) by the Main Trunk express, ahd I thought you and any of your friends whom you could get together might like to see him at the station. I'am certain that he would appreciate an interview with you. I notice, by the way, that Massey is making the fullest' use of his friends wherever he travels to make up a reception, and then has the same telegraphed all over the country as having “received, etc., etc.” Anything in this direction on our part would certainly have a healthy counter-effect.” Further comment is unnecessary.—l am, etc. B. SHARP. Wellington, July 17.
