BOXING

AUCKLAND PROVINCIAL CHAMPIONSHIP

The final bouts of the Auckland provincial championships were decided at the Auckland Town Hall last night. Much interest was evinced in the bouts, which had reached the final stages, and the spectators’ anticipations of good contests were fully realised. The best fight of the evening was the Neil-O’Brien bout, both men mixing it freelv. Neil received a severe battering in tfie first and second rounds, but managed to evade a knock-out from his versatile opponent. Making a valiant effort at the commencement of the third round Neil fought determinedly and forced his opponent to give way. This and the fourth round were decidedly in Neil’s favour, and the referee deemed it wise to award a draw. Great dissension among the spectators arose at the referee’s verdict, and he was duly “counted out.” The following are the results: — Flyweight: F. Pearey defeated H. Brunno.

Bantam: R. Purdy defeated F. Keenan. Featherweight: H. Johns defeated C. Manson.

Lightweight: P. Craig defeated T. Lindsay. Welterweight: C. McKnight defeated H. Bennett.

Middleweight: M. O’Brien defeated — Neil.

Cruiserweight (light-heavy) : C. McCarthy defeated A. Gifford. Mr. R. Neile acted as referee.
