EDUCATION BOARD
ORGANISING POWER WANTED. The Wellington Education Board met yesterday, when there were present Messrs. T. Forsyth (chairman), A. W. Hutchings, P. Robertson, G. T. London, C. H. Nicholls, A. C. Blake, A. Donald, W. D. Pike, D. McCallum, and J. J. Clark.
Grants were approved for an increased amount to enable the board to accept the, lowest tender for the new infant depart-' ment at Brooklyn; for the repair of a portion of Kahutara School, damaged by fire; temporary heating at St. Hilda’s Schoolroom, Island Bay; and for the extension of the site at Kilbirnie School. A tender of £lOO was authorised to be accepted for the purchase' and removal of cottages from the school site at Brooklyn. ’ "
The Education Department intimated that it could not reconsider the question of providing motor-car sheds, even to the extent of half the cost; that additions to Redwoodtown School must be postponed * until cases of greater urgency have been disposed of. and that in reference to the installation of septic tanks at Te Whiti the Department could not provide a grant for such provision for schools below grade 111.
The consideration of remits from school committees to be brought before the forthcoming conference, together with similar business, was deferred. The chairman said he thought they were getting too many organisations, and what was wanted was more organising power and force behind those already existing. It was of no use discussing those things until they had the conference of all education bodies. That had to be arranged by the Minister.
