WANGANUI NOTES

Wanganui, June 19.

Arrangements have been finalised for the use of the Jockey Club’s grounds on the racecourse for visiting aeroplanes during the Wanganui Winter Show. In all probability there will be five ’planes here, three of them being Government 'planes. The Moth ’planes are owned by Captain White, of Hastings, and Captain McGregor, of Hamilton. A Wanganui resident received a cablegrame from Home inquiring if he were safe after the earthquake. ■ The overseas steamer Baron Maclay berthed at Castlecliff Wharf yesterday morning with 1600 tons of sulphur from Galveston, Texas. The Newton Pine, witli phosphates from Morocco, and the Tasmanian Transport with cargo from Ocean Island are due at Wanganui shortly. The Mayor (Mr. W. J. Rogers) at last night’s City Council meeting, moved that a committea go into the question of salaries and report to the Finance Committee. That the tramways are a serious drain on the city finances was stressed during a debate last night, when the deficit for the year was stated to be £23,000 in that department. A slight earthquake was felt at 8.50 p.m.
