FIRST ANNUAL SMOKE CONCERT. Members of the Atlantic Union Oil Company’s start from all over tile Dominion were present at a smoke concert held on Saturday evening. English, American, and New Zealand flags formed the decorations, while cardboard bowsers added the requisite touch. . .. i All remained standing for the toasts of “The King” and “The President, U.S.A. Mr. G. R. Weir, outlined the objects of the Social Club, which had arranged the smoke concert, and commended Messrs. A. McCaul and N. Dobbie as the conveners of the club. In proposing the toasts of the management committee, Mr. A. Richardson (manager of the lubricating oil department), spoke of the “phenomenal success which had attended the company’s first year of operation in New Zealand. The establishing of a company in a new land in the face of such strong opposition was a difficult task, the responsibility of which lay upon , the management, Messrs. J. E. Grey (chairman of directors), E. G. Martin (director and general manager), L. C. Hampton, J. Jacobs, and B. E. Mills. Responding, Mr. B. E. Mills (assistant general manager) said that no management could achieve success without the whole-hearted co-operation which had been given by the employees. He read a cablegram of congratulation from Mr. Grey, who wished that he could be with them at the gathering, which marked the close of the first year’s sales, and extended the greetings of the Sydney start, and also a radio message from Mr. Martin, on board the Maunganui, who thanked all for the wonderful co-operation that had been shown. Everyone had done his utmost to advance the interests of the company, and Mr. Martin hoped that this spirit would continue to exist in the future.
