POLICE AND SUMMONS CASES Police and summons cases in the Magistrate’s Court' yesterday were heard before Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M. „ John Smith, alias Walsh, alias Brown, a labourer, aged 66, was fined 10s., in default 48 hours’ imprisonment for a second offence of drunkenness. His third offence of drunkenness cost Joseph Murphy, a labourer, aged 56, 10s., in default 48 hours’ imprisonment. Felix Mulligan, ■ ageed 38', was fined £2, in default seven days’ imprisonment for a fourth offence of drunkenness. James William Stewart, who elected trial by jury, was remanded to appear on March 20 on a charge of stealing, at Auckland, a diamond ring and a camera, valued at £l2, the property of persons unknown. Bail was renewed. “It’s about time he was prohibited, isn’t it?” said the Magistrate when dealing with Richard Cook, aged 42, who, according to Senior Sergeant Butler, had a list of fourteen previous convictions, and who was charged with a seventh offence of drunkenness within the statutory period. Accused was fined £2, in default seven days’ imprisonment, and was ordered to take out a prohibition order. The theft of an opal ring valued at £1 was admitted by Frank Key, a labourer, aged 28. Chief-Detective Ward said that accused stole the ring in June of last year, when he took it from the house of a relative and pawned it for Bs. He had been placed on probation, for twelve months for February of last year. Accused’s uncle had promised to keep an eye on him. The Magistrate imposed a fine of £5, in default one month’s imprisonment SUMMONS CASES. Reginald Nelson Wilfred White was fined £1 and costs for a breach of his" prohibition order. A plea of not guilty was entered by ■yVillian. Heenan, who appeared on a charge of stealing a newspaper valued at 2d., the property of R. J. Harrison. Senior Sergeant Butler said that complainant kent a newspaper stand in Cuba Street, ancf that accused had taken the paper from a pile of them. After the evidence had been heard, the Magistrate imposed a fine of £2, in default seven davs’ imprisonment. J. W. Leckie was fined £1 and costs for failing to clear his property of ragwort. On similar charges,- William 11. Herd and Cecil Maitland were each ordered to pay costs, 10s. Gordon Jackson was fined £2 and costs for using an unlicensed radio set.
