HAWERA RAILWAY FATALITY
VERDICT OF SUICIDE By Telegraph—Press Association. Hawera, March 7. At the inquest on Gladys Ethel Evans, aged 27, who was run over by a train at a level crossing on Tuesday, the Coroner found that the deceased had committed suicide by throwing herself in front of the train while in a state of deep mental depression. It was stated in evidence that before the train was due the deceased was seen in the vicinity of the crossing. When the train approached she walked along the cattle stop, taking no notice of the whistle. She then appeared to lean over and fold her arms over the rails. Four days previously she had been discharged from a maternity hospital, where her child had been born dead, causing her acute distress. She left a letter couched in endearing terms to her husband, indicating her intention.
