LATE NEWS

GAMBLER’S DEATH

EXTRAORDINARY STORY SEQUEL TO BE HEARD IN LAW COURTS (United A sociation.— By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.) (Rec. March 6, 11.40 p.m.) Paris, March 5. An extraordinary tragedy of the gaming tables on the Riviera will shortly be detailed in the law courts, elegantly-dressed man entered a casino, and put a thousand-franc counter on a certain number, Which won. The gambler did not withdraw his winnings, but remained with his head buried in his hands, motionless. The play continued, and the same number won several times successively, the croupier each time adding the gambler’s winnings till they had reached £4OOO. As the man wag, still motionless a woman touched him in order to wake him, and found to her horror that she was addressing a - corpse. Death was due to heart failure, following a heavy meal. The gaming was stopped, and the body was removed. The widow is now claiming her late husband’s winnings, and the casino is disputing the claim, arguing that if deceased played while he lived, it is doubtful whether he would have left repeated winnings on the same number.
