WANGANUI BAND CONTEST

To the Editor. Sir,—Mr. Gilberd’s remarks at the Chamber of Commerce. meeting re the guarantee of £5O required hurriedly to ensure the band contest being held in Wanganui, as reported in “The Dominion” were somewhat in error. A meeting of a few enthusiasts was got together by Mr. James Crichton and one or two others, and we met the then Mayor (Mr. Hope Gibbons), who took the chair with iMr. Murch (town clerk) as secretary. ’ Mr. Gibbons explained that he had been quite willing to find the whole of the £5O himself, but thought it would be more representative of the town if those present (some fourteen of us) would subscribe there and then what we could afford. This we did. and Mr, Gibbons, like the good sport that he is, foulid the balance (about £3O I think), so a letter was written officially by the town clerk requesting that the 1929 contest be held at Wanganui, and this together with the cheque was taken down to Wellington the next day or so and presented at the annual meeting of the contest committee that was being’ held there, and our request was received by all the delegates of the North Island Band Association with enthusiasm and carried unanimously. —I am, etc., FRED H. HOUSE. Wanganui, March 6.
