PRACTICAL ACTIVITY

STATE ADVANCES’ LOAN According to a statement made yesterday by the Prime Minister (Right Hou. Sir Joseph Ward), the total amount of advances to settlers and workers, authorised from December 10 to February 27 was £1,235,765 on 1217 applications—6l9 by settlers and 598 by workers. The actual amounts paid over during the same period were £413,175 to 311 settlers, and £358,975 to 409 workers, an aggregate if £772.150 to 720 applicants. The applicants concerned in the balance of £1,235,70a authorised for payment had been advised that the money was available for them, and it would be paid over in due course. Since December 10 new loan moneys amounting to £1.166,850 had been added to the capital of the State Advances Office. “These facts,” said the Prime Minister, “make it plain that there has been no delay on the part of the State Advances Office in giving practical effect to the Government’s licy so far as giving financial relief to workers and settlers is concerned. I need hardly point out that the total represented in the figures I have quoted is a very considerable amount for the period of two and a half months co cred. AU arrears have been overtaken so far as applications which have been received since the present Government came into office are concerned, and in respect of which the necessary valuations have been made. The applications, which are dealt with on .heir merits, Include many which were made some time ago, but which were renewed when the new Government came into o(Hce. Practical activity is being shown by the States Advances Office right throughout the country in connection with what is of very great importance and assistance to the people.”
