CITY COUNCIL
GENERAL BUSINESS A meeting of the City Council was held last night. The Mayor (Mr. G. A. Troup) presided. Also present were Councillors J. Aston, W. H. Bennett, W. J. Gaudin, T. C. A. Hislop, G. Mitchell, H. A. Huggins, M. F. Luckie, B. G. H. Burn, R. W. McVilly, R. McKeen, R. Semple, C D. Morpeth, and J. Burns. Tbe Tramways Committee reported that a deputation had been received from the Northland Progressive Association, urging that the tramway be extended.'to Seaview Terrace, Northland. The committee had decided to pay a visit of inspection to the district on March 4. The recommendation of the Works Committee that no permits be issued for the erection of buildings in the area which might be required in the future for a new access route to the Western Suburbs, via Norway Street; any authority already granted to he cancelled,, and a proclamation placed over the area in question, in order that same may be acquired by the council, was adopted. The By-laws Committee recommended, and it was decided, that motor-cars be prohibited from parking within 70ft. of the western boundary of the Grand Opera House, Manners Street; %nd that only two tramcars proceeding east be permitted to stand in front of the building at one time. Also, that the by-laws be amended to prohibit the parking of motorcars in front of the Wellington Woollen Company’s premises, at Willeston Street. Authority was granted for an amendment to be made to the existing hot water supply by-laws, in order to facilitate the heating of water by electricity. The Milk Committee reported that milk sales for January showed an increase of 4.39 per cent, over the sales for the corresponding month of last year, and cream sales, an increase of 8.34 per cent. It was decided that tenders be called for the supplpy of an English niotor-car to replace the Department's car; this car being in such a condition as to not warrant further repairs. Provision is to be made in next vear’s estimates for the money required for the purchase of the proposed swimming bath sites at Ngaio and Karori.. A request for the formation of an improved access across the Town Belt to Mount Albert and Russell (Terrace, at an estimated cost of £2OO, was not acceded to. . . - Consideration is to be given in framing next year’s estimates to the provision of additional lavatory accommodation at Worser Bay. An offer to purchase portion of a reserve at Creswick Terrace was declined. Tenders are to be called for playing rights on the Basgin Reserve during the forthcoming winter season. Consideration is to be given in framing next year’s estimates to the following proposals : —Sealing Hill Street, Daniell Street, and Puru Crescent. Improvements to. footpaths and roads, Shirley, Duthie, Beauchamp and Campbell Streets, and Messines Road. Karori. An offer to purchase a quantity of bitumen at tbe Ngahauranga. paving plant not required by tbe council is to be accepted, the purchase price to be £6 Its. 6d. per t 0 A flight of steps is to be constructed nt Kenya Street, provided the Anglican Church authorities contribute £35, being half cost of the work. ' xluthority was granted for the expenditure of £25 for improvements to a highlevel footpath at Grafton Road. Permission to erect a boatshed on the road reserve at Karaka Bay on the usual terms and conditions, was granted. The objection of a property-owner to the- taking of a 16ft. strip alon; the frontage of his property for the wineding of Glenmore Street was not upheld.
