SWIMMING FACILITIES
EXTENSIONS 'AT EVANS BAY ♦ WAITING ON THE HARBOUR BOARD Whatever action tbe City Council may take with resjiect to an exteusiou of swimming facilities at Evans Bay, is dependent upon the nature of tlie ieclamatiou scheme the Harbour Board has in mind. The Mayor (Mr. G. A. Troup) impressed this point on a deputation which waited on the City Council last night from the Evans Bay Swimming Club. The first speaker( Mr. C. 11. Chapman, M.P., said the Harbour Board was holding up any reclamation on the area, and had undertaken that sufficient space would be left for swimming purposes for all time. Accordingly development in the way of extended bath-ing-shed accommodation could, with safety, be embarked upon by the council. The swimming club also asked that electric light be provided to enable swimming to take place at nighttime. , . , , Mr. A. J. Jorgensen claimed that quite a number of people refrained from using the bathing facilities at Evans Bay because of their inadequacy. t Mr. T. J. Jenkins said that on one Saturday afternoon he counted 3000 bathers at Evans Bay. whereas accommodation was available for only 200. The Mayor (Mr. G. A. Troup) said he realised that there was congestion at Evans Bay.. When tlie Harbour Board made its reclamation, however, all the facilities would be scrapped. Mr. Chapman: The plan you have in mind has been jettisoned. Councillor Semple: The new scheme is all in the air. The Mayor: If the Harbour Board would tell us what they intended to do, we could shape a definite policy. Mr. Chapman: The Harbour Board has already decided to leave a large area available for bathing adjacent to the present area. The Mayor: We have no official information to that effect, and until we receive it we will be unable to act. The Mayor added that he saw no reason why the lighting request should not be attended to. As far as the extension of the buildings was. concerned, nothing could be done until the council was advised as to what the reclamation scheme of the Harbour Board would amount 'to.
