PULVERISED COAL
SHIPOWNERS AND ADMIRALTY INTERESTED
POSSIBLE SUBSTITUTE FOR OIL i Waited Press Association.—By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright) (Australian Press Association.) (Rec. February 26, 10.35 p.m.) London, February 26. The "Dally Telegraph” states that shipowners are keenly interested in the pulverised coal system which . has emerged from' the experimental state and Is now recognised as a formidable rival of lump coal and will possibly substitute oil. Such excellent results were-obtained on the Hororata (which recently arrived at Wellington) that owners have decided to convert all her boilers to burn powdered fuel. The Blue Star Line is similarly fitting the Stuart Star. If the system comes into general use In the mercantile marine the coal industry will benefit enormously and over forty millions sterling of oil imports should be correspondingly reduced.
It is understood that it Is likely that powdered fuel will be used in the Navy. The Admiralty has lent two vessels for the purpose of conducting ' experiments.
