REPLY TO CRITICISM

It appears that the president of the New Zealand Howling Council, Mr. 'S. Al. Stone, hue been taken to task by "ATundler,” a well-knoWu Northern bowling writer, in the course of a criticism or the manner in which the recent Dominion tournament was controlled. This writer accused Mr. Stone ot saying, in the course ot his reply to Dr. Adams, that it was desirable to cut the pairs out ot the tournament. Any president would think twice before making such a drastic proposal, and it is only fair to Air. Stone to quote exactly what he did say, in order that he may not be misunderstood. His remarks were:— "One heard on all sides that the tournament was too long. Perhaps it was; it certainly seemed long this year on account of the test games, which spread play over fifteen days, and we were very fortunate not to be held up with wet weather. It might, be desirable if the tournament is to be’shortened to cut out the pairs, but it would be very bard to make any alteration, as the headquarters shift each year, and by the time the next tournament comes round a new council is elected, and any little inconvenience that may have taken place at the previous tournament is probably forgotten.” Air. Stone states that he would not for a moment suggest that any centre should have control for two consecutive years. The present method of the tournament going round, in his opinion, was a splendid one. He failed to see how the tournament was spun out an extra day, or that President’s Day interfered, in any way, with the run of play. Wednesday of the second week was selected for President’s Day to avoid interfering with the play, and was held on the first day of the post section play to give every bowler a chance to be present, as all the bowlers who were playing in the post section play were engaged on the Wellington greens where President's Day was held.

“It was a surprise to read such unwarranted criticism after the many congratulations received from bowlers throughout the Dominion and Australia on the splendid and satisfactory manner in which the tournament was conducted,” said Air. Stone. “Although a number of visiting bowlers declared that the 1919 tournament was the best one they had ever attended, the Tournament Committee takes pleasure in knowing that it was up to the high standard set by previous Dominion tournaments. The one desire of every member of the committee was to give satisfaction and pleasure to those taking part in the tournament., and to this end everyone worked unselfishly and well. Criticism such as that under review from a scribe who does not. attend .Dominion tournaments outside his own city, is not annreciated by the majority of bowlers in the Dominion.” Senior Pennant Competition.

The following is the position of the senior pennant competition, five rounds having been played. The first and fourth rounds were postponed on account of bad weather, and will be played on March 2 and 9 in the same order as the postponements occurred. _ Games Perplayed Wins centage
