MR. J. DEEM APPOINTED ENGINEER
' Wanganui, February 26. The City Council to-night decided that in future a charge of 2s. 6d. for season tickets and a penny for a single bath be made to all, bathers who attend primary or secondary schools and are. under 14 years of age. Mr. J. Deem was appointed city engineer for a term of three years at £7OO, with annual increments of £5O each in the second and third.
It was decided to entertain delegates to the Municipal Conference at a garden party at the racecourse on March 7.
The Mayor reported that the cost of' relief works during the - winter amounted to £10,089. Public subscriptions brought in £1573. Government subsidy. £3548, while £4968 had been voted by the council.
The council adopted standing orders based on the lines as those of Auckland City Council. The council was surprised, by a sub-, stantial account from the Valuer-General of £541 14s. for preparation and revision of the valuation roll. The total cost to the council will be £645, as against the Department’s estimate of £450,’ for which the council allowed £5OO. It was decided to refer the matter back to the Valuer-General. The Railway Department wrote stating that the estimate of the cost Of an overhead bridge in Ridgway Street is £3850.' ' ' '
