FIRST A GRADE TEST.
The .weather was fine and sunny, but a fairly strong wind, which dropped considerably towards sunset, blew, and at evening the gathering at Cook’s Gardens numbered 2000 to 3000. There was the keenest interest In the first of the A grade test' selections, eleven of New -Zealand’s best combinations being ready to receive the verdict of the judge, Mr. T. 3. Rees. The selection for the competition was Thomas Keighley’s "Lorenzo,” a fine tone poem composed .for the September Bellevue Contest at Manchester. AU Keighley's compositions have been based on Shakespearean plays. "Lorenzo” is a dramatic composition .with ample scope for excellent work, and full of character. Although very popular with the bandsmen who were tested, on ■ 'their playing of it to-night, ‘■‘Lorenzo” containsample scope for revealing any weaknesses. ‘ The judge remarked that he was delighted with the competition. Some very fine playing had been heard. One band had. given him most satisfaction. The firs.t three were very close. The awards were as follow: — St. Kilda 1 . Woolston 2 Qtieeh. Alexandra’s Own 3 • Palmerston North * ...Garrison, Wanganui ........... * Kaifc0rai'.................... 6 Wellington Tramways t Grey mouth t ' Tlmaru 9 Wellington Silver 10 Otago Mounted Rifles 11 * Tie for fourth place, t Tie for seventh place.
