MIDDLETON MARSHALLING YARDS.

Dominion Special Service. Christchurch, February 25.

Following on the visit of inspection last week by the general manager of the New Zealand Railways (Mr. H. H. Sterling), additions and alterations to the new marshalling yards at Middleton have been decided upon, the cost of which, it is estimated, will be over £lO.OOO. In addition to a good deal of alteration work, three extra roads, each capable of accommodating 90 waggons, will be constructed to relieve the congestion of goods traffic, which frequently occurs. The danger to men engaged in braking waggons during shunting operations from the hump has been recognised by the Department, and it has been decided to install retarders, which are fixed to the sleepers, and automatically check, the progress of the waggons, so that there is no necessity for the man ta touch, them- .
