BURGLARS LEAVE IN TIME
At 10 o'clock on Saturday night, when Mr. John Sheedy, nightwatchman, was going his rounds, he discovered that a glass pane had been removed from a window at the rear of the.' premises of Messrs. James Smith and Co., drapers, corner of Cuba and Manners Streets. Mr. Sheedy communicated with the Taranaki Street police station, and in response to the alarm, Sergeant Wilson, six constables, and two detectives were soon on the scene. The building - was surrounded while a thorough search was made within, but evidently the intruders had got away. Mr. J. O’Sullivan, supervisor, in the employ of Messrs. James Smith and Co., came from his home in response to a telephone call, and aided the police in their investigations. The pane of glass which was removed from the rear window had been carefully dug out from the putty, and placed on the ground, without damaging the glass. The intruder had to climb through an aperture of only 18 inches by 12 inches, and they made their exit by opening the back door from the inside. No finger prints could be found on the pane of glass. It will be some days before it can be ascertained what goods, if any, have been stolen.
