LAWN TENNIS

MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE MEETING THE STAND AND CARE OF COURTS The Management Committee of the Wellington Provincial Lawn Tennis Association met last night, Mr. C. G. Swinburne presiding. The hon. secretary, Mr. W. B. Watson, reported that many persons had not replied to a circular letter sent out with regard to overdue subscriptions, and after discussion it was decided that the matter be put in the hands of a solicitor, and that summonses be issued where necessary. With regard to the inter-club competitions it was decided that after March 9 a knock-out competition be played in the third and fourth grade matches. The New Stand. The plans were submitted for the layout of the new stand and centre-court to be constructed at Miramar, and on the motion of Mr. H. N. Burns the lay-out of the scheme as submitted to the committee was approved. Mr. W. T. Harbison contended that besides the stand and centre court they needed seating accommodation on another four courts. Mr. H. R. Baigent also considered this to be a necessity. Mr. Swinburne said that that was an entirely secondary consideration, and did not in any way affect the plans submitted for the centre court and stands. All the committee wanted was whether the scheme be approved of or not. After further discussion on the advisability of additional accommodation,, Mr. Burns’s motion that the plans be approved of was carried. Care of the Courts. Mr. Nation suggested that a conference of experts be called to give their opinions on the best methods for the construction and top-dressing of the new courts, and also for the top-dressing of the present courts. On the motion of Mr. Swinburne, it was decided to write to various groundsmen and experts in Wellington asking for their considered opinions, any further action to be postponed until their opinions had been considered.
