PLUNKET SHIELD CRICKET

OTAGO v. CANTERBURY

PLAY DELAYED BY RAIN DOUBLE CENTURY TO BLUNT By Telegraph.—Press Association. Dunedin, February 25. The Plunket .Shield cricket match, Otago versus Canterbury, was resumed to-day in varying weather, rain hindering the play for an hour in the afternoon. The wicket was good, however, though a little soft this afternoon. Otago continued its innings, and made 602 before A. W. Alloo declared the innings closed. Blunt went on this morning and more than doubled his not out score of 104, being caught off Page at 221. The visitors commenced their second Innings in disastrous fashion, both Page and Hamilton losing their wickets for eight runs at stumps. Harris also was out for 7, the position being three wickets down for 47, Roberts not out 24. Blunt (104) and Cavanagh (1) resumed to the bowling of Merritt and Newman, the Otago crack, after a brief interval, finding his feet :.nd going for both bowlers. Boundaries were frequent, and the score mounted steadily. Merritt Tricky. Merritt was tricky, and was troubling Cavanagh a good deal, the young batsman being most uncomfortable when facing him. He gave two chances, when he was seven and when he was 19, the first being a very easy one, Newman dropping him. Blunt did not take long to work himself into best form, and everything loose was punished severely. He was a good bit more happy facing MerrLt than yesterday, and not all the constant change of bowlers could keep down his total. The partnership was broken when Cavanagh stepped out to a wrong ’un from Merritt, and was smartly stumped by Burns. He had matted well for 38. Blunt was then 164. Score, 439 —4—38. Dickinson lasted only a few minutes, scored a single, and then got in front of a ball from Page and went out l.b.w. 440 —s—l.5—I. Kain Delays Play. At lunch Blunt was 210, and Galland, who followed Dickinson, was 17. After resumption at 3.25 p.m., rain having held up play, Blunt was caught off Page by Roberts at deep square leg. 509—6—221. He had batted in his best style most of the time, but early in the innlnugs gave some ridiculous chances. A. W. Alloo joined Galland and was' 13 when he pulled Page into Cunningham’s hands close in. 545—7—13. Monk joined Galland, who a few minutes later pulled a lifted ball from Newman high into Roberts’s hands at extra cover, giving an easy catch. 547—8— 45: In the absence of Eastman, who injured a muscle in his ribs, Heenan was the last man in. Monk was in hitting mood, and with the help of nine 4’s, quickly compiled 43, bringing the total, with Heenans’ useful 14, to 602, when the Otago captain declared. Page and Hamilton fell quickly, the latter being clean bowled by the first ball from Dickinson when 5, and the former being caught by Heenan off Monk when 3. Two for 11. Harris joined Roberts, who carried his bat for 24, when his colleague was caught by H. C. Alloo off Shepherd when he was 7. Stumps were then drawn. OTAGO.
