A NEW SYNAGOGUE
FOUNDATION-STONE TO BE LAID SUNDAY WEEK An old landmark has disappeared from view in the demolition of the .Synagogue on Wellington Terrace, a structure which served as the Jewish place of worship for nearly fifty-nine years. The old building had for some time been found to be too small for latter-day requirements, having had seats (originally, at all events) for 82 males and 62 females. The ark was enclosed behind sliding doors, and contained the sacred scrolls, including the five books of Moses in Hebrew, pointers, silver bells, silver breastplate, and mantles. A scroll, the set of silver bells, .and the mantle were the gift of the late Mr. Jacob Joseph: a scroll and pointer were presented by Mr. and Mrs. and a similar gift was made at one time by Mrs. Phillips, in memory of her late husband. Mr. H. Phillips was also a liberal donor to the Synagogue. The removal of the old building makes a site for the new one, which will be dignified and distinctive in character. The plans, prepared by Mr. Gray Young, provide for a handsome building with accommodation for 500 persons. The new Synagogue will he built of brick and reinforced concrete with sufficient strength to serve the community for a hundred years to come. The contract has been let to Mr. E. C. Knight. The ceremony of laying the foundation stone will take place on Sunday week. The Rabbi (Rev. H. Vail Staveren 1. ■ who has been the head of the community for fifty-one years, will preside at the laying of. the stone.
