FAILURE TO ACCOUNT
CANVASSER CONVICTED James Kennedy Murphy, aged 31, a canvasser, pleaded guilty when charged in the Magistrate’s Court on Saturday with failing to account for £25 to the Colonial Mutual Life Assurance Society, Ltd. It was stated by the police that accused had been employed as a canvasser by the complainant firm for the last 20 months. From November sto January 14 he_hnd collected premiums amounting to £25, for which he had not accounted. When questioned by his employers he admitted having misappropriated the money, and applied it to his own use. Part of it accused had used on horseracing. Accused had lost his employment as a result of the affair. He was a native of Ireland, and had been in New Zealand for two years. He had not previously been before the Court. Accused was convicted and admitted to probation for twelve months, an order being made that he make restitution within the period of his probation.
