AMATEUR ATHLETICS
ELECTRIC LIGHT MEETING VISITING CYCLISTS PROMINENT Onlookers crowded the shadowy grandstand and enclosure of the Basin Reserve on Saturday night, to see two of New Zealand’s premier amateur cyclists, T. Oakley, of Masterton. and F. Grose, of Christchurch, race against each other under the glare of electric flood-lights. Of course, there were other events, which were keenly followed, also, but cycling was the branch of sport which was to be especially to the fore. And added interest was lent the meeting by the fact that, under the rule recently passed by the New Zealand council, pacemakers were to make their first appearance on the tracks of this country. M. Gane, of Wellington, was with Grose on the back mark in the 880 yards handicap final, but they were unable to catch the handicap men. J. Carswell, of Wellington, paced Grose and Oakley in a special match race of three laps. Oakley hung almost at the pace-maker’s wheel, with Grose in close attendance, over the first two laps. At the bell lap (not paced) the Canterbury man drew ahead, and over the final furlong increased his lead to several lengths. The time was Imin. 45 2-ssec. All-round Championship. At the commencement of the programme, J. Pearce challenged and defeated J. Carswell for his place in the first eight for the all-round championship series. The following is the result of the 440 yards scratch cycle race, which was the event for Saturday night in this contest: — First heat: M. Gane defeated F. Christenson by three lengths, in 34 2-5 seconds. Second heat: H. Scarfe beat L. J. Pearce by a narrow margin in 34 2-ssee. Third heat: E. J. Foot won from D. Toomer, after a close finish. Time, 35 4-ssec. Fourth heat: Owing to the indisposition of H. Horsfall, W. Bray won by default in 35 l-ssec. In the semi-finals, Gane beat Scarfe in 34 4-ssec., Bray defeating Foot in 36 4-ssec. Gane won from Bray in the final. Time. 24 l-ssec. A heat to decide third and fourth places saw Scarfe beat Foot. Time, 25 3-ssec. A spill which T. Oakley met with m the second heat of the one-mile cycle handicap, did not prevent him from starting in the last race of the evening, a three miles contest. This event also counted for the series mentioned above. Cycle pacers were employed, but the pacemakers were not yet accustomed to the part which they had to play. Grose, who had established a good lead, dropped out early in the race. Placings at the finish were: T. Oakley, 1; M. Gane, 2; D. Toomer, 3; W. Bray. 4; H. Scarfe, o. Time taken was Tmin. 21 l-ssec.
