NEW YEAR RACING

HONOUR’S CLEAR-CUT WIN AT ELLERSLIE CLIFFORD PLATE TO MASK FINAL DAYS AT TAUHERENIKAU, MARTON, AND STRATFORD Most of the New Year racing fixtures came to an end yesterday, with the final days at Auckland, Pauherenikau, Marton, and Stratford. At Auckland Honour redeemed his first day’s failure in heavy going by easily winning the two-year-old race. The Clifford Plate was won by Mask, while the other distance handicap saw a dead-heat between Vertigern and Concentrate.

LAST DAY AT AUCKLAND DEAD-HEAT IN GRAND- ! STAND HANDICAP HONOUR’S CONVINCING ROYAL STAKES 'PAGANELLI SECURES SPRINT (By Telegraph—Froijn “The Watcher.”) Auckland, January 2. The summer meeting of the Auckland Racing Club was concluded at Ellerslie to-day in fine, bright weather. Apart from roughness, the track was lu flue ordtr, A fine finish was seen In the principal handicap, when Vertigern and Concentrate dead-heated, only a head in front of Oratrix. The liiccarton colt, Honour, spreadeagled his field in the Royal Stakes! winning very comfortably from Ceremony and Staghunter, the favourite. Supremacy, getting badly away. PaganelH won the sprint from Vallar and High Finance. As a result of an inquiry into the running of the first race, the Goodwood Handicap. A. Tinker, rider of the winner, Mervette. was' suspended for a month for interference with Sleepy Sol, who finished fourth. It was decided not to alter the judge’s plaelngs. Au appeal has been lodged. , _. Totalisator business was good. The amount . put through on the day was £80,197, compared with £78.6i9 10s. on the fourth daj- last year. The total for the meeting was £319,048 10s., which. represents a substantial decrease of £i.i.4.lJ on last year’s gathering. , , _ An inquiry into the start of the Royal Stakes found that Supremacy was Interfered witli by Ceremony jumping across, but there was no cause for action. GOODWOOD HANDICAP. Mervette. well placed all the way, got up in the opening event to beat the leader, Lady’s Bov, by a head. Sleepy Sol. Ballymov 11, Hyde Park. Talisker, and Le Choucas were near the leader going down the back, and on the turn Le Choucas had dropped out. Lady’s Boy led into the straight from Sleepy Sol. Talisker. and Mervette. Lady’s Boy was only caught j by Mervette in the last few strides, lalI Isker was a bit over a length away, with Sleepv Sol. Hyde Park. Sir Russell, and The Lover next. The Lover, who was fancied, lost his chance at the start. Talisker had every . chance. SYLVIA HANDICAP. Eaglet, firm favourite for the two-year-olds race, missed the jump out, but he was soon up in front with Gay Ballerina, and they ran to the straight ahead of Tea Queen. As they came into line Tea Queen moved up alongside the lending, pair and Eaglet was the first to weaken. Tea Queen was unable to do better- than run Gay Ballerina t) three parts of a length. Eaglet was two lengths baek and then came Imperial I’rince and Bennie. Gay Ballerina accomplished a smart performance. Tea Queen, ■ whose racing experience is still limited, ran well and looks Jke turning out useful. Manson rode a remarkably weak finish on her and it ’poked as if she should have won. GRANDSTAND HANDICAP. The principal handicap produced a fine :ace and a great finish. Bright Glow, Vhlte Fang and Pegaway were the favourites, but none of them got into the -Honey. Oblneinuri settled down in; front ■vltli Flying Juliet, Bright Glow, Concentrate, Golden Wedding and Slaosl, Vertigern being in the middle of the field and Oratrix bringing up the rear. The order was very much the same down the back, •and turning down.to the half mile the field began to close up, Vertigern becoming more prominent. Ohinemuri, Flying Juliet and Slaosl were still in charge turning for home with Golden Wedding, Bright Glow, Corinax, Transformer, Concentrate and Vertigern all prominent. A furlong from home they were spread right across the track and over the last bit Vertigern and Concentrate singled themselves out. In a royal battle the judge declared a dead)cat between the pair. Over the dying stages Oratrix flashed up with an electric -run and finished within a head of the deadheaters. There was a short gap to the bunch, in which Flying Juliet, Corinax, Bright Glow, Catkin and* Pegaway were prominent. Vertigern did not get an altogether clean passage, or he would probably have won outright. At tile same time Concentrate was well out all the way and covered a lot of ground. As a matter of fact, Concentrate was a bit unlucky not to receive the -• clear-cut verdict. Oratrix, last at the six furlongs, and also at the five, finished with a paralysing run, and it looks as If on a dry day she would have won the Cup. Pegaway was stopped by his weight. Bright Glow ran well, but White Fang was never dangerous. , AUCKLAND HURDLES. Wharncliffe was a good favourite in the Hurdles, but he drifted a long way back early, and eventually refused to jump at the fence seven furlongs from home. The race was another series of mishaps. Salamander fell at the second fence and brought down Mangani, 1 Karamu. and Farndon. This left Bright Land In charge from Ramblin' Kid and Clockwork. Ramblin’ Kid took charge down the back the last time, and Bright Land fell half a mile from home, leaving Wedding Maxell and Clockwork to chase the leader. Ramblin’ Kid won easily by six lengths from Wedding March, who beat Clockwork by four lengths. Glenotus finished on and fust missed third money. Potoanui was next Wedding March did not put tn an appearance until tile last five furlongs, and ran a good race under his weight. ROYAL STAKES. Honour convincingly proved himself the » best two-year-old iii the Royal Stakes. When it came to racing home he made hacks of the opponents and fairly bolted In. At the start Supremacy, who started a red hot favourite, got left three - or four lengths, . and was also > slow to get into his stride when he did go. Gold Tinge moved first and witli Speed Light led for a furlong, by which time Ceremony had run up and taken charge. Approaching the half. Supremacy had put in an appearance, and as they -an for the straight the order was: Cer-mony, Supremacy and Honour, at about two lengths intervals. Gold Tinge and Speed Light were next. Once in line .Honour challenged and romped home an easy winner by two lengths from Ceremony, who beat Staghunter by a similar margin. The latter got up to bent the tiring Supremacy on the post, hut there was no merit in the form outside Honour and Ceremony, though possibly Supremacy would have been closer with a clean jump out. At any rate there can be no doubt that on a firm track Honour is in a class by himself. White Wings and Speed Light followed the placed horses. The first furlong was run in 13 l-ssec., two In 25 2-ssec. and three in 37sec. and the last half-mile In 49 2-sscc. . „ CLIFFORD PLATE. The uncertainty of’ racing was emphasised when the screaming favourite, Laughing I’rince, went under lu the three-horse weigh t-for-age race. Count Cavour made the running at u slow pace for the first half-mile from Laughing I’rince and Mask, and then quickened his stride to lead down fhe baek. Running up the hill to the five-furlong post. Laughxn" I’rince took the lead and at the half Mask joined Count Cavour. Laughing I’rince leading the pair into the straight bv two lengths. Onee In line Mask threw out a challenge and. catching the favour-

ife a hundred yards off the post, beat him home by half a length. Count Cavour was four or five lengths back. The sectional times were: Five furlongs, Imin. 12sec.; six, Imin. 23 3-fisec.: seven, Imin. 36 3-ssec.; one mile. Imin. 49 3-sscc.: nine furlongs. 2min. 2 l-ssec. The last half took 49 3-ssec. . Laughing I’rince has never shown himself a real stnver, and lie was found wanting at the finish, but if he had not run to the front up the hill five furlongs from home be might have won. It looked as if L. G. Morris held his opponents too cheaply ' GOWEN HANDICAP. Class prevailed in the open sprint, when PaganelH defeated the promoted haek, i allar who tries to win from end to end. Behind Vallar in the running were Paganelll, Kingfield. Nancy Lee, and Consent, and past the half into the straight High Finance became prominent in the second bunch. Once in line PaganelH set out after Vallar and beat him home by three-quar-ters of a length. High Finance was two lengths back third, with Consent, Nancy Lee. The Hawk, and Cimabue well up. PaganelH outclassed his opponents. The local horse. Vallar. of whom a high opinion is held, did not disgrace himself. JlcTavish displaced Reed on Cimabue, but the Leighton gelding ran no nearer n stake. The Hawk was never within striking distance. High Finance, Consent, and Nancy Lee ran creditably. . GRAY HANDICAP. Despite the big field In the concluding event, the favourite, Eager Rose, scored nicely, but she was a bit lucky. _ Sir Mond made the running from Air King, Good Bov, Hone Heke, and Eager Rose, with Tea Money and Amor prominent in the next bunch. This was the order to the straight, where Eager Rose pushed through and came on to win by a neck from Good Boy, who beat Amor by a head. Air King was close up' fourth, followed by Ten Monev.'High Faintin’,, and Briar Root. Amor looked unlucky to get beaten. He got badly crowded in the concluding stages. Kinross put in a dash on the rails in the straight, but did not run on. DETAILED RESULTS (By Telegraph.—Press Association., GOODWOOD HANDICAP, of 550 sovs. One mile. 2 J. WAIRARAPA MEETING TERI WINS PRESIDENT’S HANDICAP RUSSELL HANDICAP TO VERONESE The final day of the Walrarapa Racing Club's summer meeting was carried through in fine weather, the wind dropping and the sun making a welcome appearance before the racing commenced. The attendance was naturally not so large as on New Year’s Day, but nevertheless was very ■ satisfactory. The racing on the whole was better than on the first day, several very close finishes resulting. The totalisator put through £21.046 10s., as against £24,408 on the same day last year. TAWAHA WELTER HANDICAP. A good dispatch was effected In the Tawalm Welter, though those nearest the rails appeared to secure a slight benefit. Cloyne was the first to show out from Mandarine, Raukura, and Billion. Approaching the live-furlong post Raukura was slightly ahead of Cloyne, with the field close up, and Sky Bird moving forward on the outside. A little further on Sky Bird had run to the front, his nearest attendants being Raukura, Mandarine, and Billion. Swinging into the straight there was little between the leading four, and thev need neck and neck over the last eou'ple of furlongs. Half-way down the straight Volplane joined in, and in a great finish five of them crossed the line locked together, Volplane securing the verdict from Raukura and Billion. Mandarine was fourth and Sky Bird right up fifth. JUVENILE HANDICAP. The start for the Juvenile Handicap was delayed somewhat owing to the fractiousness of two or three runners, the principal offender being First Money, who had drawn the rails. When the field got away Courtlike was slightly in front of First Money and Rule Britannia, with the others close up. The field raced round the bend in close formation. Entering the straight

Push appeared to bold a slight advantage over First Money and Courtlike. A little further on the field was lined across the course with very little between the various horses. It was a most exciting race over the last furlong and a half, as at least seven or eight of the runners looked possL billtles. Push stayed on well to beat Tobaccoland by a neck, with Becky Mine, who finished very strongly over the last bit, about the same distance away third. First Money was a good fourth, while the majority of the others were right up. RUSSELL HANDICAP. Rameses forfeited his engagement in the Russbll Handicap, leaving six runners, of whom Veronese was made favourite. She hopped out smartly as the tapes were released, but • almost immediately gave way to Miss Ransom and Banket. After passing the five-furlong post Banket put a break of three or fojjr lengths between herself and the others. Approaching the straight Royal Duke and Quantum improved their positions, the latter running up alongside Banket just before the straight entrance was reached, at which stage Veronese was a few lengths away. In the run home Banket faded out In marked contrast with her showing on tlie flr-t dnv, while Royal • Duke also disappointed. Finishing very resolutely Veronese passed the field to win, going away bv about three lengths from Quantum. with Royal Duke about a length away, and' Miss Ransom right up with him' in fourth berth. PRESIDENT’S HANDICAP. An excellent dispatch was effected in the President's Handicap, Teri, as usual, commencing smartly and taking the lead from Royal Game, David Garrick, Thurnbell, Seatown and Rowley. The order was the same at the mile post shortly after passing which Seatown dropped back slightly, but then ran up quickly on the outside. Passing the six-furlong post Teri still had command with the others in close attendance. At the five-furlong peg the order was Teri. Royal Game, Seatown David Garrick, Thurnbell and Rowley. Royal Game and Sejitown were up with Teri on the bend, but Webster was riding confidently and at the entrance to the straight was again showing out from Seatown and Royal Game, who were abreast. The two latter made every effort to catch Teri, but the latter was going as well as they were and lie passed the post a fairly comfortable winner. Scatown outstaying Royal Game and securing second money by a neck. A couple of lengths further back came Thurnbell with David Garrick at his girth. Rowley was sonic distance further back., . GREYTOWN HANDICAP. Moutoa Wonder, Billion, and Red Glow were scratched for the Greytown Handicap. leaving fifteen runners, of whom Arlklnul, notwithstanding that he had drawn number 14 marble, was made a firm favourite, with Second Thought next fancied. The field got away well, Raukura, Atholspear, and Arlkinui making a verv fast run on the outside. At the bend Arlkinui had his head in front, but a little later on Miss Gowrle had assumed command from a bunched field. When bends were turned Jioriiewards Arlkinui and Miss Gowrle were feeling the effects of their earlier efforts, while the colours of Second Thought, Raukura, and Atholspear came into prominence. There appeared to be everv prospect of a particularly close finish ‘but 80 yards from the post Raukura and Second Thought, both hard ridden, separated themselves out. the former winning a spirited contest by a neck. Atholspear was a length away third and Dermod fourth. MOROA HANDICAP. From a walk-in start in the Moroa Handicap the field went away evenly, the early leaders being Bissau, Cloyne, and Imarosebud, Courageous, and Blaek-eyed-Sue be,ing at the tail end of the field. Over tlie next two furlongs there was no very material change in positions, but on the bend Imarosebud. Stanchion, and Mouton M ender had practically bridged the gap between them and Bissac. The latter retired when the serious work began, leaving Imarosebud in charge, with Stanchion, Moutoa Wonder; and Mandarine close up. These four were fighting grimly down the straight, and it was not until the last 80 yards that Stanchion forged ahead to win by a lengtii from Imarosebud, with Moutoa Wonder the same distance back third. Mandarine was a good fourth. WAIHENGA HANDICAP. Borsalene was first out in the Waihenga Handicap, and Inferno last away, but after approaching the five-furlong post Rameses was out in front. Racing round the top bend Deluge and Borsalene were lying second and third. Twlnk and Decoy Bird tailing the field. Rameses and Deluge began to give way approaching the straight, while Rotowhero and King Midas came into prominence. Borsalene ’looked like winning half-way down the home stretch, but Mackie rode a hard finish on King Midas, and he eventually won by half a length, with Rotowhero a further length away third. Rameses was fourth, and Deluge fifth. PIRINOA STAKES. By tlie exercise of a good deal of patience tlie starter had the field for the Plrinoa Stakes well in line when he released the barrier, but Agreeable then swung round and took no part in the race. Imatea Girl, on tlie rails, was the early leader, but tlie field bad not gone far when Daly rushed Shortly to the front and he led round tlie bend from Imatea Giri and Tripos, the favourite (St. Jlelba) being two or three lengths behind on the rails. Approaching the straight Imatea Girl, Tripos and St. Melba were right on tlie heels of Shortly. When straightened up for home St. Melba came through on

the rails and appeared to have Shortly’s measure, but vigorously ridden, the latter hung on gamely to win narrowly from the favourite, with Tripos in third place. Projection, who finished, very fast, was fourth. s DETAILED RESULTS By Telegraph.—Press Association. TAWAHA HACK WELTER, of 150 sovs. Seven furlongs. 8 Volplane, 9.1 <M. The weather was fine and the course in very fair order for the concluding day of the Marton meeting. The attendance was fair and tlie totalisator handled £21,t>48, compared witli £19,514 10s. on the concluding day last year. The total for the meeting was £51,210, compared with £oO,241 last year. JUNCTION PLATE. Lucky Bag won the Junction Plate all the wav. He was followed into the straight by Acc’redity and Indolent, but he shook off Indolent’s challenge and won by a length. Equitant was a moderate third and Accredity and Praeda were next. SECOND HACK HURDLES. Novar was a short-priced favourite for the Second Hurdles, but he let his optimistic supporters down. Atarerla led into the straight, where Novar took charge, but failed to stav on. and in the end Lady Gay got through on the rails and won by threequarters of a length from Atarerla, who beat Red Bank by half a length. Novar was fourth. ELECTRIC HACK HANDICAP. Thrift and King Quex were the favourites in the Electric 'Hack Handicap, on which the wagering was fairly even. After Australis and Acred had led to tlie straight King Quex came from the back and won comfortalbv by a lengtii and a half from Acred. Half a length away was Australis, just ahead of Thrift.
